Default Problem with coolant system/heater core?

Hey all,

Kinda stumped by this one. Lately my car is been acting weird in the cold weather. After the car warms up to normal coolant temp when i'm driving, if I stop at a stoplight for a decent period of time, with the heater on full blast/full warm, the air coming out of the vents slowly starts to cool down. Then when I start driving again with load on the engine, the air warms back up.

This is a bit annoying and unnerving in the cold weather, i'm scared my heat will go out, and here in MN during the dead of winter, that's kind of dangerous.

Any ideas on this? I was thinking it could be my thermostat or heater core, but I really have little experience with this kind of stuff. My coolant temp always stays constant while this is happening.

TIA

I would start there as well. When your car is idling, it doesn't generate as much heat as when under load.

draining it would be a good idea, but you will inevitably spill some, but it is cake, if i remember it is only 2 10mm bolts.
