Default Will a B18C1 swap on a EK Hatch Pass Smog in CA?

Yeah guys I'm about to buy a EK Hatch with a USDM GSR B18C1 swap bone stock except for only an AEM C.A.I. done to the engine and i'm just wondering if it'll pass smog LEGALLY in Southern California without any problems? Yeah i'm just wondering that because It's going to be daily driven and I don't want to have the cops on my ***...I'd really appreciate it guys...thanks

if the year of the motor is higher then ur car and u have all the emissions equipments hooked up with no check engine light then you will have no problem passin emissions

If it's an actual C1, it's a USDM motor and you're off to a good start.

As far as SMOG, you shouldnt have a big problem passing since the engine is newer.

But if you are asking about getting the engine BAR'd then...

the AEM CAI should be fine as long as it has the CARB E.O number and that it is for the GSR engine.

It wouldnt hurt to to do a tune up as well (Change spark plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor, air filter, and oil change)

Either way, just take it in... if you fail, you get a free retest plus the ref will give you a checklist of EVERYTHING you need to pass.

2 questions,

did your car come with the b18 if not was it dohc,

if either of these questions is a no they you will probly fail visual inspection at the smog shop, for it to be a legal swap you need to go to the referee and get a sticker showing thr swap and that that car is now smoged as the new engine not the old one, remember the b18 is a bigger motor, puts out more carbon dioide that say the d15-d16 or even the b16 if it fails then your screwed! ! !

You can pass SMOG, yes...as in the tailpipe-sniffer test.

But eventually, the DMV will have you go to a TEST ONLY station when you do your bi-annual smog check to renew your registration. The TEST ONLY station does the VISUAL inspection in addition to the SNIFFER test. If you go to a SMOG TEST ONLY station with that GSR motor, you will fail the inspection if you do not have a certification sticker from the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR).

The BAR employs "Referees (or "refs", like so many people on Honda-Tech like to call them for short) are basically people that enforce California's extensive smog laws. If you do an engine swap, you have to take your car to them for them to do a VISUAL inspection to ensure that your engine has all of the necessary emissions components so you stay within the smog laws. Once your car passes the VISUAL and SNIFFER test, they will issue a certificate saying that you have LEGAL ENGINE CHANGE on your car. Then, next time you go to a TEST ONLY station, you show them your sticker... (in your case 1997 Honda Civic with 1999 Acura Integra 1.8L engine) that way, they will pull up the emissions specifications for the 1999 Acura Integra 1.8L and base your emission on thse numbers (Instead of the emissions numbers for a 1997 Honda 1.6L Civic).

Ha, of course you can skip all of this and go a shady smog shop

what harness was used. I have a 96 EK w/ a 96 GSR swap. But I won't run on my OBD2A P72 ecu. The shop I took the car to said I had to get the obd2-obd1 harness and sold me a P28 chipped ecu.
I want my car to be legal here in TX, but I keep getting the runaround.
WHen I plug my P72 ECu in I get check engine lights for cylinder misfires on 1,2,3,4 and I get surging idle, all sort so of problems.

I know you CA boys know how to do this right...HELP?

Vic

I used my 1993 del sol shock tower harness mated up with the 1994 gsr engine harness. obd1 to obd1 and i had no problems.

Since your car is a 96, shouldnt it be obd2? same thing about the engine, shouldnt a 96 gsr engine be obd2 as well? Thats a bunch of bull for the shops to tell you that you need an obd2-obd1 harness. i dont see what could cause all of those problems if you have an obd2 car and obd2 engine. Have you tried using a different p72 ecu? Yours is probably defective?

never thought to try another P72? The shop told me that it was because of the DX harness in my hatch, if I could get a 96-98 EX harness, I MAY have a better chance at using the stock OBD2a P72.

I'll ask a friend to lend me his ecu...oh and I can't use a GSR harness because it doesn't match up w/ the EK harness (something about the plugs and the firwall I don't know)

Thanks though
