anyone got a guide for removing the gauge cluster on my 97 prelude, and removing the really crappy white face ones, and returning them to stock :D.
I've been trying to get "really crappy white faced ones" out of my 2001 that i bought used too... were you able to pick up a set of stock gauges somewhere?
i have the ones in my car that change colors blue/green, so it has an extra switch with dimming dial. are these the same ones you have?

so zexifiedlude, does that mean that the white face gauges didn't just go on top of the stock gauges, and that when you installed them you actually had to take the stock ones out? i was kinda hoping that when i peeled the white ones out, that the stock ones would just be underneath... might just be some wishful thinking. so did you do the install yourself when you put them in?
yeah its REALLY annoying especially since i bought the car used and the guy who owned it before me was the one that put it on. i don't mind the white so much during the day, but the blue/green at night is just terrible IMO. i have to suffer for his fast and furiousness... gah.
well let me know if you have any luck and i'll do the same. probably try to get around to it this weekend sometime. were you just going to cut the wires that run to/from that dimmer switch and color changer? i'm worried that i might mess up the lighting of the entire gauge cluster if i do that. good luck on your de-ricing

Just for reference... here's the thread i started a couple weeks ago. The last post seems to offer some good instructions that i'm gonna try to follow. thanks to those that responded here:

yeah that last post was me. Ive removed them before and its easier to cut them and destroy the aftermarket gauges rather than trying to wiggle them up over the needles again and risk breaking the cluster or needles. So just cut them enough so you can slide them free.
WAHOOOO!
finally got around to taking apart the gauge console. Followed some of the advice offered here about taking it apart (thanks!)... and look what i found lying underneath the gross eBay gauges...
guess i got pretty lucky that whoever installed them decided to just leave the stock ones in underneath. so... took out my scissors and snip snip...
Now it looks like this...
it may not be a big deal to the people with stock already, but trust me, after driving it around for a couple months with bright blue lights glaring in your face everytime you look down at the speedo, its such a welcome relief.
One thing i did still have questions on about this, is the dimmer switch that was attached to the gauges. Here's what the switch with wires looks like underneath my steering wheel.
and the little black box on the left reads "Approprative Inverter", which I think the wires from the switch are running through.
Can anyone help me on how to get rid of this switch? Is it ok to just cut the wires running to it, and should i just leave all that mess underneath the steering wheel if its not hurting anything? Just want to get this crap out of my car...
Anyway, I'm pretty pleased about the stock gauges (beautiful!
)... thanks for the help

The inverter runs off ur parking lights. So whenever you turn on ur parking lights the gauges would light up. Find the wire running to your parking lights. Follow it up and you should find a wire running from it to the inverter. The dimmer that controls the brightness of the gauges runs off the same wire and once you detach the wire from ur parking light wire it should all come out easily. Just tape or wire nut the old parking light wires back together.
Hmmm... I think I didn't explain this right. The aftermarket dimmer that is shown in the picture isn't connected to the dash dimming light at all. It was only used to dim the brightness (and also change the color of) the white gauges, so now that i've clipped the white gauges out, it doens't do anything when i turn the ****, or flip the switch.
Also, the stock dimming switch (thats on the left of the steering wheel) still has full control of the brightness of the stock gauges and other lighting. So right now, that aftermarket dimming switch isn't really doing anything. I hope I'm explaining this right.
Thanks for pointing out that i really shouldn't mess with that Appropriative Inverter box tho...
