timing belt
I need to take off my timing belt (to get to my water pump). The book I have (Haynes - Civic 84 through 90) says that I have to support the engine and undo an engine mount. Is this correct? I don't see why I'd have to do this, plus I watched my cousin change the belt a few years back and I don't recall him removing the engine mount. It wouldn't be the first time the book's been wrong.
If you need to change the belt you have to remove the mount. If you just need to remove it off the cam gear to relieve belt pressure on it and the water pump , then no you dont have to remove the mount. Remember to relieve the belt tennsioner first.
Yeah, I still don't see it. It's not like the mount goes through the belt or anything. It's completely out of the way. Same for the alternator. The book says to remove it and it's bracket; but it's not in the way -- I just pushed it aside.
I think my book never did a rebuild of the 87 CRX and stuff like this is only valid for the 88+ CRXs. Or maybe for the FI CRXs. Be nice to get solid confirmation tho'.

The book is assuming that you're removing the timing belt to replace it. Usually people replace the timing belt when they do the water pump, and vice versa, because it's easy when you have it off already. If your car is near 100k miles, I'd replace the belt.
*Sigh* I guess I'm not making myself clear. Or I'm being incredibly dense! My point is that I can remove the belt without removing the mount. Or at least that's how it looks while the belt is still on. If it ever stops snowing, and if I can manage to finally remove the @%$& crankshaft pulley, I'd be able to absolutely positively say for sure. The mount is not physically in the way of removing the belt. Unless there's a reason, like removing the mount reduces tension, then I'm leaving the mount on -- and the book is incorrect for my car.
Thank you!!! I figured that was how it was on some engines, but I wanted to be sure. FYI, that is NOT how it is on my engine -- the mount is a good 4 inches forward of the timing belt. Now all I gotta do is figure out how to get that pulley off... Borrow my friend's impact wrench, I guess!
