Default LSD....is it really worth the extra $$$

Im about to buy my jdm h22 swap and before i do i would like to get the ppl on HT opinion. Is the LSD really worth spending the extra money for if i plan on boosting the motor? And what is the main differance between the LSD and the Hydralic?

well....lets put it into perspective...you are making an acute right turn, super hard....you get into the turn, and start to lose traction on the front end....

with an open diff....you have to brake and steer back to safety....

with an lsd....slam the gas and point the wheel where you want to go....done

lsd = fun

it is the funnest part of my car, more so than rmf headers, 4.71 final drives, etc...

How much is that place charging for the lsd? Mine was $300 or $400.... getting an aftermarket one will cost a lot more then OEM and you'll also have to pay for installation.

jdm lsd good or would you prefer to go with the quaife?
is the quaife really worth the extra 900$ + installation?

Not enough information...

How will you drive the car, what will you be doing with it? It's possible you don't need one if you need to ask.

dangerous is some people's middle name. i for one am saving up for a lsd before i do the 5 spd swap. you can't beat a lifetime warranty though. even when raced. how many companies can stand behind a product like that.

quaife makes a good unit (i have one), but i'm not sure it's worth 500 bucks more than the oem honda LSD, esp for casual driving.

there are differences in the engagement b/w the oem honda and the quaife, but, in the end, there's not much difference at all. i'm not sure about the prelude m2b4 lsd, but the ITR lsd and the quaifes i've driven are pretty much the same thing.

Yeah, its worth the money for an lsd on especially a fwd car. It evens the power out to both of the wheels, helps alot.

I really liked the quaife I had in my civic's tranny. I really want to get one for the prelude, but damn are those things are expensive. Maybe I'll cheap out and get an OBX.

YES!!!

it's way cheaper now than it will ever be, and it adds enough value if you ever decide to sell, that you'll surely get that $300 back. just go for it, and enjoy it.

firstly..thanks to all that replied. i learned more about them than i knew before. as far as how im going to be using it...well...in the beginning its jsut going to be a daily driver. as i sink more money into the motor, turbo etc it will slowly not be a daily driver. once i break 500 whp(which i have every intention of doing) it will be strictly a track car...and i will buy something else to start on...or buy a shell for when i build up the usdm H23(thats as i get time and im bored). from the numerous repsonces ive recieved on this i am going with the LSD tranny. THe best thing about HT is(most of the time) when ihave a question i get actual ppl that have had experiance and knowledge about it. Thanks again guys. WHen the swap is done ill get pics and i got a hookup at the local shop for the dyno....and a guy i know at work is really good with tuning....he tunes on the street....then ill take it to the shop and get numbers for everyone. Thanks again for the help guys.

where do you get this from. what lsd are you speaking of. can't be the quaife because its price is going up. last time i saw it was like 985. are you speaking of the oem, phantom grip or obx.
for the obx post, it has worked for some and some it hasn't. i haven't heard of any quaife's going bad here on h-t. if it did, it has that lifetime warranty so no worries really. do a search on the obx lsd and consider cautiously. one problem with it is that if you try to remove the axles it gets stuck is the differential. over time it is said that the cylinder slot that is on the obx lsd changes shape into an oval and basically wedges the axles and more often than not something is really gonna get damaged when trying to remove one or the other.

i'm sure he's talking about the price difference between getting a swap with or without a stock LSD.
