can you use 91 crx si axles in a zc trans?
i say that you can, but one of my buddies says that he has read some tuff on the internet that you have to use a bunch of other ****?please let me know
Good question, goodthing you asked before trying anything. This is what I think:
1. The ZC tranny is a d-series tranny, so why not? the casting is the same, right?
2. The ZC tranny was designed to have an intermediate shaft. Therefore the passenger side shaft would work, but the driver side would not be setup for the axle clip to snap the axle in.
So my theory is no, it won't work, but I am not completely sure. Now you may be able to get away with some 86-89 teg axles with the teg int. shaft. Someone will know, I am just thinking out loud

what you need for a ZC tranny is....ZC intermediate shaft, and 90-93 integra axles. this is what i run on ym setup now and nothign else will fit. hope that helps..
The CRX Si axles will not work with the ZC transmission. Like someone said, you need the ZC shaft and integra axles to fit the zc tranny.
Which is better ZC tranny and 'teg axles or Si tranny and axles with ZC gears?
I have a ZC tranny sitting in my garage and bought it since it has the closest spacing of any of the D series trannies. I realized a while ago that it won't work with my axles.
So should I go with the ZC tranny and Integra axles or should I use the gears from the ZC and drop them in an Si tranny. The tranny will eventually be torn apart anyway for a taller 5th and an LSD. I'd like to stay as light weight as possible. The application is N/A.
Thanks in advance.

Depends on what you want and how much money you have.
Si axles can be made to work with ZC tranny - you need to swap inner joints.
Pass one - either a ZC or teg 90-93.
Driver one - i believe 86-89 (not sure about years) Accord 5 spd.
---------------
Integra axles will be a direct swap into SI if you have a ZC intermediate shaft. Make sure you get a driverside teg axle for your driver side.

chasrex:
If you already are breaking the case open to play with gears, put in the SI final drive as Denny317 said to make overall gearing even shorter (but your tall fifth gear will still save your gas mileage). No matter which tranny you use.
Another thing to consider: People go with intermediate shaft setup to eliminate torque steer from the different length axles. ZC Int. shaft can be inserted just into ZC differential (diameter bigger than civic/crx). Since you're gonna go with LSD, i don't know which LSD for you to get if you use teg/ZC axles. I guess Phantom Grip won't change anything, but do you want it?

Thanks for all the replies. I appreciate it. I'm still kinda dumb when it comes to trannies. I was wondering though: If I'm going to be using the ZC gears and an LSD (probably a quaife), is there any disadvantage in dropping it in my HF tranny case? Can I use Si/DX axles/CV joints with it? Are there any disadvantages with that when compared with just using the Si case?
I don't have the ZC intermediate shaft and I don't know what LSD to use so I guess going ZC all the way is going to be a headache.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I used a ZC tranny case, Si diff/bearings/fd, ZC 1,2,3, Si 4th, HF 5th, with stock long/short axles in my 89 Civic Si, also remember to swap the exterior tranny seal on the drivers side of the tranny with the smaller one from an Si. Otherwise tranny fluid will leak out. HTH

I thought the Si differential won't fit in a ZC tranny case. Boy am I confused.
Anything else that you can recall about the conversion that you want to share? BTW excellent gear choices for a quick daily driver. Who helped you?
thanks!

Well, my Si tranny bearings were spent, so I just swapped all of said internals to the ZC casing. Everything just fit right in. Maybe I got lucky with the diff bearing size, but my 89 diff/bearings plopped right in. I don't know what year the ZC tranny was.
I did all the work myself. No real trick to it, just keep track of everything and take your time. these are very easy trannies to work on.
It's a really nice tranny for street and autocross, and the HF makes highway use quite nice, with 90 mph spinning 3900 rpm in 5th.
Good luck with your project!
