Tire choice: Kuhmo 712 vs Used FZ4's .. (read)
I need new rims, and am interesting in going on the rota group buy. Basically because I live in Canada I have two choices. I go with the revolutions motorsports deal and have it shipped to family 10 hours away, and I end up paying $1250CAN for the rims, and Kuhmo 712s installed. OR to make things simpler I can jump on a similar group buy for $1050CAN for the rims alone and buy a set of used Toyo FZ4's with 40% on two and 60% tread left for another $225.
I know FZ4's aren't great, but its a 10 hour drive back and forth I'd save, and neglecting wet weather performance, how much worse are FZ4s compared to 712's? The way I see it, I'm not going to be terribly impressed with the 712's after driving on A520's and T1-S's, so I'd probably be happier getting new tires sooner!

My company reimburses me 36.5 cents (US) per mile that I drive my personal car. From this figure, I estimate it probably costs, conservatively, 25 cents (US) to drive a car. THis would include mileage, wear and tea, depreciation, etc. So, if you are driving 20 hours, and let's say you average 60 miles an hour, You are going to incur a rough cost of $300 (US).
Why don't you buy the rims alone, and buy a new set of some other kind of tire (Kumho or other)? Why must you necessarily buy the used FZ4s?
It does not make economic sense for you to drive for 20 hours.

The economic sense is like this.
I can buy the rims locally for $1050, and for me to buy brand new "cheap" tires like the kuhmos locally would cost another $450 approx. Therefore it comes to $1500 + installation locally, vs the $1250 with the 20 hours driving.
I could splurge and go in debt right now, but unfortunately I have a whole bunch of other odds & ends to pay for like belts, waterpumps, cat, and namely bodywork and new paint. Saving $250-350 will help me out.
And for arguments sake lets say I wanted a good set of tires like A520's or T1-S's, well they'd cost me about $160x4 = $640 + $1050 = $1700 vs the $1250.

I really need some more critisizm then votes alone! What makes you guys think the Kuhmos are a better deal? Just because they're new or because you think they are very good? I think comparably they are probably still much worse than A520's or T1-S's, but better than FZ4's.
