96+ EX gear box on 88-91 civic h/b
i got a 89 civic HB with a 4spd gear box, and i would like to know if 96+ EX 5spd gear box will bolt up to the 89-91 bell housing. I know the 96+ bell housing is hydro and the 89-91 is cable i just want to know if the gear boxes are interchangeable?....are the bolt patterns the same? is the 96+ input shaft different? etc...

you can bolt a 96+ clutch & flywheel to an 88-91 d series motor, and the 96+ transmission will actually bolt up to the motor as well, but the way the transmission bolts to the frame rail is different. you'd have to fabricate a mount and then convert to a hydaulically actuated clutch system.
i don't know if the guts are interchangeable from one tranny to the other. i doubt it though.

well i suggest not to do it urself..cuz i messed mine up when i tried it myself..(91 HF and 93 EX) u can swap over the complete gearing but u'll also will have to swap over the final gear(just the gear, not the whole differential) input shaft should be completely the same.

i don't know what went wrong, but when i tried to put the housing back together. it got caught and never closed and never released so i was F@#$%..plus this was my first time doing this kinda thing..
there's couple of things to take into consideration...make sure all bearings are exactly the same size(if not u must use the stock ones)..differential won't be able to swap over due to different inlet size of bearing(just swap over the gear instead)..work in a clean area free of dirt, rocks, sand etc.(even a little spec will cause some sort of damage)..keep the parts clean...replace the throw-out bearing relief spring to an SI(new cost about $5)...and finally test fit everything first before u re-install the bell-housing(meaning test fit it in both halves of bell-housing)
