NYPD Salvage Yard Snares Car Thieves
NYPD Salvage Yard Snares Car Thieves
(12.08.05- AP) — During the past year, Brownsville Auto Salvage became a popular destination for car thieves.
Authorities say the salvage yard in a gritty section of Brooklyn received more than 100 stolen cars and $2 million in stolen auto parts. What their customers didn't know: The business was operated by police officers posing as mechanics.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced dozens of arrests on Thursday during a news conference at the salvage yard.
The undercover business "was used to capture car thieves who were drawn to this location like bees to honey," Kelly said.
The New York Police Department leased the salvage yard last year for $2,000 a month. It then staffed the operation with detectives who had backgrounds in car repair and welding, and stocked it with an array of auto parts.
Some of the business done there was legitimate. But the undercovers also quietly made it clear they wanted stolen cars they could "chop": disassemble for parts to sell on the black market.
"Criminals learned by word-of-mouth that Brownsville Auto Salvage might trade in stolen parts," Kelly said. "When that happened, we soon had plenty of business."
Duped thieves showed up with Cadillacs, Mercedes, Hondas and other models. The cars had been stolen from throughout the five boroughs, as well as from the streets of Long Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Florida and South Carolina.
The alleged car thieves included associates of the Genovese and Lucchese organized crime families. Others were part of a ring that convinced owners of fully insured cars to report them stolen.
The owners would hand their car keys to the thieves, who would deliver the cars to the salvage yard. When word came back that the cars had been chopped, the owners would make fraudulent insurance claims.
Car owners charged in the scam included an accountant, an architect and a school teacher, Kelly said. One allegedly made a false claim for a $65,000 BMW.
Through Dec. 4, auto thefts in the city were down 11.8 percent compared to the same period last year, to 16,715 from 18,951.

dunno if that means ITR theft is down though. Id like to see what kind of inventory came through this place.
another thought, what if your car was stolen, and ended up at this salvage yard. the police know about it, so what happens in your case as far as insurance, etc?? the police know where the car is, shouldnt they inform the insurance/owner so it can be recovered?? But then that could jeopardize the investigation. But then the rightful owners insurance goes up, has to pay all these fees, probably lost money, etc. Im curious how this sort of thing worked out during the investigation.

They could give a **** so long as they make the collar. I'm friendly with the chief of Car Theft Unit in Yonkers. He's a mean mother fcucker. So long as the kid is caught he doesn't care who he walks over to do it.
No problems with me though. He pulls my caR over every time he sees it just to make sure it's me driving it and not anyone else

I would go out on a limb and say that that cop has confiscated at least 250+ vehicles single handed in the time that I have been in and around cars. The man is a book of useless Honda/Acura knowledge and seizes without a second thought. If your 97' GSR has 01' swirlies and you have no proof, it's gone. If you have a 5 lug and no paper work as to where it came from, it's gone. He walks around local ricer car meets with sheets of VIN #'s from stolen Hondas/Acuras and pops hoods to check if the #'s correspond.
I love watching that **** unfold makes me feel better about my self, like watching "Cops"

With a turd for a paddle?
Seriously though, that's an awesome story. I wonder what they're going to do with all the seized parts/vehicles?

They might want to check the salvage yards in corona across from shea stadium.
If they don't have a part, they always say they will have it in a few days.
lol

Maybe they should go get someone like that for the Suffolk Autocrime Division. I have yet to been pulled over by them, reason being cause I spend most of my time upstate at school, but I know plenty of people that have had problems with them and they are not knowledgable at all. A couple of them are, but otherwise most of them know **** and just cause more problems from what I hear.

Used to be...
I remember the time when I was growing and had Uniforms in my house to look...
And those days I used to get tickets, make a phone call and that was it...
Used to go on chases wait for the cop, say hello and then just go about my business...
all of those days are over.
Man those were great times!
