Default ATS FD at the drags

So i searched and the only one that came close was the account with poofaces car. So my question is: has anyone taken their R to the drag strip with an ATS? sure our cars werent "meant" to be drag cars, but i sure love doin it. So whats the verdict? faster than stock FD? same? slower? anyone have any numbers?
thanks

Wow, all this interest in the ATS/FD all of a sudden.

Where did you find out about it and why exactly do you want it if I may ask? Oh, you want to go FAST!!!

In answer to your Q. ive been listening to everyone praise it in their N/A set ups and was planning on dropping a turbo in my R, but my plans have changed and im going to stick with N/A and just buy like an older talon or eclipse and use that for my turbo craving. From what i hear the ATS FD is like everyones favorite mod for their R..so i want to see what all the hoopla is about!

Understood,

Then what you should really do is find someone with this mod installed and see if you can either get a ride or if you might be able to drive it. I am not trying to discourage you at all. It is a great mod but, most of us who choose it have a particular reason for it and 1/4 mile or drag is usually Not it. I am NOT flaming you and am not trying to insult you or your decision. I would just hate to see someone with a preconceived notion of what the ATS/FD is supposed to do, not be totally satisifed with it's performance once installed.

Most people who choose this do track,"road course or Auto-X" events.

It is by far the best thing I have done yet. But, like I said, you should try to get to drive a car with it installed before you go through all the trouble and or money of having it done.

Good luck,

A.

Hmm, some one also do ATS FD vs. JDM FD run. I think w/ ATS FD, depending on the HP you're making, you might have to shift into 5th by the time you hit the 1/4mi... which wouldn't be too good on your time.

And after that pointless post in the Competition forum about FD's I want everyone interested in this mod to know first hand exactly what they are getting into.

Yes the 5th gear shift may be sooner for 1/4 but, as most of us know that are interested in this, we want the holeshot! Ripping out of corners is also just fun as Hell. I had loads of fun last week at the X with it. My instructor said that my car and I were the fastest he was driving with that day! Off the line traction has got to be dealt with more now but in the sweepers and powering out of corners it is just invaluable.

Yeah, I know you installed it for autoX and track, but I was just pointing it out for the main poster of this thread.

So, how did the autoX go? Any revews yet of the FD at the autoX?

Sweet. thanks for all the usefull info guys! helpfull as usual . and yea, i love the drag, but since the weather is warming up im most definantly going to try my luck at some track events around here..nothing spectacular, just a huge parking lot and cones set up..but its a big event and the closest thing that we have<that i know of> to a auto cross course around here, theres one early april im going to try and make..i hope i get too!!!

Also thanks for the new ? Cosworth. Since the JDM isnt as aggresive as the ATS, maybe it would be better for street/drag? but that 4.9 sure does sound nice!

Understood Cosworth, I wasn't responding all of that for you, I was also reiterating it for the origionator.

It wetn well, My times were Not what I wanted, I had an off day and actually hit a cone for the first time much to my chagrin. It was a test&tune day with times announced but no points or trophies awarded.

As I posted somewhere else, Practice makes perfect. It was my first day out with my new mods and on different R compounds and my Volk's. I truely enjoyed it all, even if the weather was bitterly cold.

I think since I was not accustomed to the bigger course layout that I was not in my full swing and wasn't able to beat my fastest pathetic 44.423. I try not to be hard on myself since it was all in fun but, I hate to not be good.

I was however working hard on getting used to my car in it's new form and handeling. I was not used to the high speed of the course coupled with the need to be topping 2nd and really using 3rd. I hit 73mph in the back straight and had to then heel toe and down into 2nd for 2 tight gates and a 5 cone slolom, before the chicago box and the eventual finish.

On a good note however I do not attribute my poor times to my new FD, since I seemed to get faster and that rodney,"with the same FD" actually not only posted the fastest time of the day but beat all of the 90 other competitors in his EG hybrid, Amazing, simply amazing. He needs a sponsor. I however need More practice.

IMO the jdm final drive is better for drag, but the ats is better for autocross.

If you want the best of both worlds I would go with the JDM Final drive. It is cheaper, and I personally think it is better for drag racing. (since that is what the original post was about.

Here is one example I have had with both. I personally have the JDM final drive, but my friend has the ats. Whenever we drag race, he always falls behind when he shifts into 4th and I am still in third, but in autox he is going to have an advantage. Again, I would still go with the JDM if you want to drag, or even do both.

Not sure what the USDM FD is, but if you are going to drag, why even bother with a final drive? your tranny is final now, maybe get a lightened flywheel. thats all

Unless you're trapping over ~106mph, then you won't have to shift into 5th (assuming stock usdm itr tranny and ats final drive with stock rev limiter). Damn, where's that gearing calculator again?

And yes, it definitely kicks *** at autox over stock setup.

And finally, a local friend has the jdm final in his itr and his 1/4 times got better by .2 after installing.....

Excellent thank you for that info! So since ill probably be doing drag and track maybe ill go with the JDM..i street race too..i know..bad me..but its so fun! so the JDM will probably be a better setup for that too...so many choices...anyone know a price for the JDM FD?

TaDaaaa! http://www.autocrossing.com/cgi-bin/gearcalc.cgi

There ya go Ken and others, now bookmark it and use it wisely ...

I do have to disagree with what was said earlier about 2 equal ITR's dragging and just having the FD changed, comparing the JDM(4.785) to the ATS(4.929).

The the 4.93 pulls so much harder in ALL gears, it doesn't top out that much quicker and if you had raced into 5th gear I'd forsee the ATS car toasting the JDM car as soon as it bangs into 5th and just takes off. This is my opinion, I have NOT raced a JDM/FD to a ATS/FD head to head yet, and not raced another stock R with just a FD.

Like I said, we are planning on dragging in a few weeks, so I'll post the results.

Hey Ken, only 10,000 more miles left on my warrenty! You KNOW what that means? Cams baby!!!

extreme? lmfao....just some cams, springs, some bolt-ons a shitty ecu. but thanks for the compliment 1grey a. as far as the jdm 4.78 is concerned, it's junk. don't get me wrong, it would be better than the stock us 4.40. i'm not talking out of my *** here (although, that would be cool) i had the 4.78 in my otherwise stock R tranny, and when my clutch exploded, i took that opportunity to swap in a ATS 4.929 and ATS lsd also. with the ATS 4.9, the car is much less larthargic with the revs, getting the car into the powerband much faster. numerically, it is not that big of a difference from the 4.78, but in the real world is it a massive difference. although, now that i am pushing the car harder, first gear is all but useless. a longer first gear might be on order, but we'll see how i fair out at the drags.
regarding drag race, we'll see how my 60ft times compare to the 4.78. with 0 degree camber and i had 2.0 60 ft times. i know, that sucks on slicks, but sue me. i am not a 1/4 mile expert and the car was not set up for it. so, setup this time is 4.929, ATS lsd and -3 degrees camber. not the best drag setup, but i don't feel like getting 2 alignments in the next 2 weeks. i'll just keep my roadrace alignment, thank you. i am hoping for low 13's, and with a good tailwind, high 12. i know, pipedream, but we'll see in a few weeks.
