2nd gear grinding when cold
hello, i have a 91 accord ex 5spd with 160k and i live in mn so its cold. whenever im driving my car for the first 15 minutes and try and go into 2nd gear, it grinds (not a lot but it grinds) even if i try and let the rpms drop and go in ever so slowly. i let it warm up for 10 minutes each morning before school too but that doesnt help, it has to be driven and the oil finally warms up, then after 15 minutes i can go into 2nd just fine....ive been going from 1st-3rd gear now ever since mid november but thats getting annoying and i dont want to do that all winter, it stinks too when you are trying to get out into traffic and you have no acceleration. i did change the tranny fluid last year, i used honda manual tranny fluid, i was just wondering if there was something better for the cold that will stop that grinding and that i can use all year round without causing wear on anything. i did try searching but couldnt find anything thanks
I'll have to say I had this problem on my 95, just like yours, even the easiest shift would make it grind. A couple months later my clutch master cylinder went and had no pressure. After I had it replaced, haven't grinded a gear in almost a year, as compared to once a day. My guess was the clutch wasn't disengaging fully.
Im pretty sure its not the clutch....it has 12,000 miles on the new clutch, and all my other gears go in fine. so i just think its my 2nd gear sychro that isnt the greatest, only grinds in when its cold my geuss is that its because the oil is sooo thick and not moving around in there real well thats why its griding because once it warms up its fine. so im just looking for a different fluid that will work better at really low temberatures, anybody recommend GM sychromesh, i herd its pretty good.
