Progressive- Trip Sense
Since my insuranse is through my mom, she signed me up for this program through Progressive auto insurance...
basically, its a computer chip that hooks up to the ECU com port
the chip collects data on acceleration, breaking, driving duration, etc
the question is could this effect my ecu or car at all?
i get 50 bucks for it, and it could drop mu rate since i dont drive the R much

why? because at any time they can look up how you are/were driving....you go over the speed limit or they see you are pushing your car beyond the safe driving limits, up goes the premium or out the door goes your coverage.
It shouldn't have any impact on your ECU but its purpose is to collect data on your driving habits. It has a direct correlation on your premium which is a bad thing if you want to "really" enjoy the car
Drive it hard and the insurance company will return the favor.....

from reading the site, it says that your rates won't go up, and you get to control if you upload the information to Progressive. I still don't know if I would do it or not though

My interpretation of this is that you will not get a PERSONAL rate increase. But they are collecting data that they use to determine rates for demographic groups. Meaning all 18-35 year old Integra owners, or all Type R drivers in your zipcode, or however they stratify it, could get an increase.
So, to the original poster, since it sounds like you can't get out of it, please help the rest of us out and drive like a grandma for the next 6 months
FWIW, I do not think it will harm your car in any way. But I don't know.

Thanks for the advice guys
Since we have already had snow up here its not gonna be driven much...
The site says that my rates wont go up, however, in the future they probably will
it says i have to have it in 95% of the time i drive, so when i really drive the R, ill just take it out
Thanks for the advice

I would NEVER trust them enough to give them that sort of info. They can lick my ***** if they want to know every move I make.

I wouldn't trust them either, but I just put up what the site said for the people that didn't read it. I personally wouldn't put that in my car. It also says that you are the one that uploads the info, and if you don't want to upload the info you don't need to.

I hear ya, I would never put that in my car either. I read what the site said. I still don't trust them
. Im getting a real bad feeling about driving in the future, like if they decide to put these f'ing things in cars made from the factory and they don't give you a choice of uploading that info.. so they could just monitor your driving behavior. America is sooo damn conservative and full of regulations damn, enough already. Soon they're going to punish you for owning a sports car (as if they don't enough already with ins premiums) and take away one of the few liberties we have left.

Good assumption, but wrong based on the contract you sign.
I'd put one in my car, just to monitor my driving habits out of curiousity. I just wouldn't upload the data unless I actually thought it would give me a discount.

I am an advocate of personal privacy, because I believe that the more data that is available to the general public, the more often that data is subject to misinterpretation and your people can waste thousands or millions on the defence of or scrutiny of information that probably should never have been in the hands of un-sworn people whose responsibility for the information is suspect.
If they mishandle the information or inadvertently disseminate it, or incorrectly interpret it, you could waste a lot of time and money defending yourself.

You're going to have to ask them that.
It's not beyond all conjecture that if they're going to go as far as collecting the information in order to determine whether or not you're driving safely, that at some point they're going to manufacture a device that actively interferes with your driving if an interpretation of the data reveals that you are behaving in a way that puts the insurance company at risk.
I am not, as you can tell, the very biggest fan of this idea.
We owe it to the people and the insurance companies to behave responsibly when we are behind the wheel, but at the same time I believe that too much available data leads to too much misinterpretation.

Personally I woulnd't do it either. This reminds me of a story I heard about with the GM's OnStar. OnStar is a GPS based unit, so they can monitor all kinds of stuff. I read someone actually got a ticket because of OnStar. I'd rip that thing out if I had a GM.
Have you heard about OBD III? (remote testing)
