Spun bearing? i hear this sound at 4k rpms
i just did a 90k tuneup with timing belt and pump ect...
i also had a problem with oil, and i just assume that i spun a bearing, but not sure.
can anybody show me how to check?
i get this whizzing whirling sound on partial throttle or no throttle at 4k+
then i get knocking sounds like clank clank clank when on full throttle.
or is it detonation? whats what?

Does it go away when you press and release the clutch?
My spun bearing knocked like hell when u first started the car then went away. bring the rpms up to about 3k and it started to knock. Did not take it over 4k so don't know what it sounds like up there.

From what I have heard, spun bearings make a "clunk" noise, not a "whizzing whirling" noise. Man, I don't want to be thinking about a spun bearing...

so what happens now? does it get worse? everytime i drive it?
and most likely its going to be rebuild time.
rebuild mines now and get a new crank
or b20 block?
i dont' know what to do. It doesn't seem to lose power.
but its annoying and probably scaring my crank.

The bearing is held in place by a small tab that stick out of the bearing. There is a small notch in the block that keeps the bearing in place. Sometimes the small tab will break or bend and allow the bearing to spin in the journal. That is the basics of a spun bearing. Its usualy caused by loss of oil between the bearing and journal on the crank causing it to want to spin the bearing in to block. I'm 90% sure this is what it means.
The bearings make a wirling sound aswell as a Helicopter sound..if this is somthing you suffer from it is recomended you fix them as soon as posable. This seems to be very comon problem amougst b series motors.
I'd fix it fast if I were you, as if you let it go, you'll end up buying a new crank instead of getting it polished. If you do it yourself, take your time and spec out your bearings very carefully. Also buy a good dial bore gauge and stay way from plasti guage.
do u guys know how much thats going to cost?
i think its going to cost alot cause u need to tear the motor down.

Depending on how much time you want to spend, you can just drop the oil pan and do it all from under the car. Personal, I'd pull the motor and throw some ctr pistons in it while you got the motor apart. That is what I wanted to do when I spun my bearing, but was talked into taking it in for warrenty since I only had 10k on my motor. Good luck with what ever you do, just remember if you do it yourself, take your time and it will pay off in the long run.
Also if you do it your self, or you have some one do it for you, make sure you put the crank on a live center and make sure it is not out of round. When they did my bearings, they did not check this and I spun the bearnings again after 20 miles. Turned out I had a bent crank, and that was causing the bearings to spin.
