like the title says. Over the past two gas tanks my gas mileage have decreased about 10mpg. And has also started backfireing. Im guessing its running rich. could cold weather have anything to do with it? If it is running rich how do i tell for sure and how would i go about fixing that. I think the timming is good because i've never played w/ it.

 

Have you ever tried to do a tune up? New o2 sensor and all that.

 

i replaced my plugs less than 8k ago and my o2 sensor was replace about 3k ago. spark wires were replaced w/ plugs and also air filter. The only thing i didn't touch was the distributor. any way to test my distributor? any other sensors to check?

 

I would check your fuel pressure regulator. Its easy to do. when the engine is running just pull the vacuum line off the top. If it sprays fuel its bad. If it doesnt its good. I would suggest some kind of fuel injection and throttle body cleaner. I used sea-foam. I smokes really bad for the first few minutes but my rev was a lot smoother amd it gave me better gas mileage also.

 

Any loss of power as well? High idling?

If it's idling high all the time, the problem may be a bad coolant temp sensor. It'll richen the mixture to warm the engine up, but if it fails and always thinks the engine's cold, it's gonna dump fuel.

Another possibility is a timing jump, if the belt and tensioner haven't been done recently...

 

it does feel like it has lost high end power. and sometimes bogs down (assuming because of too much fuel)....to check the timming i have to take the valve cover off to get at the cam gear right?

No, just pull the cap off the distributor. When the crank is at TDC, the rotor should squarely line up with the #1 pin on the distributor cap.

and if its not then i need a new distributor? how do i know if the cap is good?

how do you put the crank at TDC?
Sorry for the newb question but I've always wondered that

 

There is a mark on the crank pully that u align with the line on the cover
