Default Stuck In Park

Hi all. Newbie here.

But have a problem with a 2000 Honda Accord 4cyl Automatic Trans where it is locked in Park and won't shift out.

Figured how to unlock it out of park using a pen and clicking the unlocking mechanism by there gear shift. However, this has to be done each time now as once it is placed in park it stays in park.

Question is, what are the likely causes and this can be a 'do it yourself fix' ? I read some info on the solenoid and there was another on possibly a fuse issue but that was another car make and model.

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Check to see if your brake lights are working. It might be a broken (or unplugged) switch at the brake pedal, that controls the brake lights as well as the shift interlock solenoid.

Thanks Jim. The brakes lights do not go on as you mention so gonna try to replace on my own.

And, after your problem solving, found this other posting using your info.

Is it all of the outside lights or just the brake lights that are wired in this lock out circuit . I had the third brake light burnt out and that did not cause a shifter lock out.......problem or not.......

The problem seems to have fixed itself, for now. I'm assuming the break pedal switch will need to be replaced soon. Thanks for the response.
