when my car is cold, the shifter is rough as hell, especially when slowing down to a stop light and gonig into 1st i get bumpy resistance on the shifter.

is this normal for honda's? keep in mind that it was about 20degrees this morning and that when the car is warm it shifts like butter.

i have no grinding or bad transition of gears its just basically the shift handle itself seems sluggish and i know the gears are as well? just a case of a cold motor?

 

Yea dude same for me. Leave ur car on to warm it up for a minute or two. U'll get way better gas mileage (i dont know why but it does on my car) and u'll save ur engine some wear by allowing the oil to warm and do its job better. It also makes shifting butter smooth too, which is what u seem to want.

 

I used to have issues with my tranny being hard to shift when it was really upon startup for the first 5 minutes or so. Tranny fluid was too thick. I switched back to Honda MTF and all was good. No problems for ~3 years. Are you running Honda MTF or something different?

 

yeah try draining your fluid and putting some honda mtf in. its like 5 bucks a qt from honda(you probably need 2). it works much better at hot and cold temps than anything out there. should clear up your rough shifting.

 

This is common because transmission oil is slow to warm up, since it doesn't have a heat source like engine oil does.

It is also not a good idea to downshift into first while the car is moving. First gear is geared so low that it puts a lot of stress on the synchronizer unless you double-clutch it. Wait until the car is stopped before you shift to first.

 

thanks for the info i sure as hell don't double clutch, also i have no idea what fluid is in this tranny i just bought the car over the summer i guess i'll put some honda MTF in it, in a week or so.

i just noticed it a lot today because i didn't give my car a warm up time like i usually do, i just ran out the door and str8 to work.
