I am just wondering why the hell you would need to downshift into first gear? My car doesn't grind, however it won't go into first unless i'm at almost a complete stop. If i double pump the clutch, it does though.
Try double clutching.
When in 2nd - depress clutch and put gearshift into neutral - lift clutch
Then depress clutch again - and put into first.
Double clutching helps the synchos work better - especially with a high ratio gear like first.

Yeah, but first doesn't have synchros. Or it's only got a single instead of double or something like that. I'd suggest to just take your time putting it in first. Eventually it'll drop in if you're patient and going slow enough. And matching revs helps a lot if you're still moving at a decent speed. I've gotten it down with clutchless downshifts lately where I can do it into first around 40 km/h now. Then again I haven't tried it with the clutch lately, so maybe because I'm doing the equivalent to double clutching is why it's so easy. Hrm. I'll try it out in a couple hours.
I've got similar problems too, sometimes it works really well and sometimes it take 2 or 3 times, in the manual it states this is natural with reverse gear as this stops you going from 5th to reverse but didn't say anything about 1st gear.
