I am in the process of removing the motor out of my '89 Crx Si, would dropping the motor out of the bottom or buying an engine hoist be easier? Also where can a chain be found to attach the hoist to the motor if I go that route? Thanks
i left two studs in for the intake and exhaust and hooked chain to that ( but i only pulled motor, not tranny. Either way you do it, i would not recommend " dropping" it...
Alot of people I see , take the car off the motor. Supposedly it's easier. It looked easier. I took mine out with a engine hoist. You just gotta be careful. Slow and easy.

Well, I've been working on the car for the past couple of hours and looking at it, it just doesn't seem to me that it's easy to drop it out the bottom like I've seen done. I don't know if anyone's done it well enough to write about it, but I definately don't have the money for a hoist.
Pulling The motor out with a wench above the car is what i did.
Double up the chain. Bolt to the Stock Motor mounts brackets.....When you take the motor out lift the Driver side out first...the tranny might have a tendency to knock stuff. When you drop it in, Watch your cross member and your tie rods....I dropped my b16a in from the driver side into the passanger side and it took a couple tries.....but it fit like a charm.....People have had success with "dropping it" or lifting the car off it like a shell...But i don't like having my car up that high. hehehe....Anyway....Good luck...My vote goes to a wench over the car, Cherry picker style is the best and easiest....Just a word of caution.....Watch were put those chains.....Tps sensors break off and **** can get fucked up with improper chain placement.......Good luck bro.
P.s Have fun with that rear motor mount. hahahaha

What i do to remove out the bottom.
Raise the front of the car to the absolute highest you can on your jack stands postioned only on front so car is at a large angle. measure total height of motor to total height you have with 2 jacks under motor make sure it will clear before you try this.
Remove the front cross member and front motor mount.
Remove all cables hoses etc..
undo rear motor mount.
Get 2 floor jacks one to support engine pan and one to support trans case
block of wood between jack and pan works good for protection
Now undo the left and right mounts and slowly lower the motor down i have had to put a pipe on the front pan hard bars and pry them a little out of the way but other than that it comes right out.
Plan B which i did for my B16 swap. INstead of engine hoist i put a large piece of square tubing over 4 rafters in my garage attached a chain over the motor and used my come along to raise and lower the motor in and out. I have probably done thsi method the most it's pretty ghetto but it works like a damn. just be sure you buy a strong enough come along.

easy and fast way of doing it.takeing it out from the bottom is how honda does it.drop the front crossmember and drop the motor.

It all depends on what kind of equiptment you have access to....I own a hoist so its always been easier for me to pull the motor out the top
A nice lift would be nice though

Go to Northern Tool and get a load leveler and a hoist. Maybe 170 total, its definatly worth it.
Now see, I got mine on craigslist.com for $50, and bought the leveler new. When your trying to clear AC lines, the leveler is DEFINALY worth the money.

Simple.
Harbour freight sale's "truck" jack stands that have about a 2 foot max lift.
Jack car up as high as possible, set stands. Add block of wood ontop of jack, then reset the jackstands as high as possible.
Remove front crossmember.
Use said jack to help lower the enigne slowly out of the car.
Tilt engine so the trans is on the ground, lift enigne slightly to remove jack, and slowly set enigne onto floor. Slide the engine out and your done.
Usually the easiest way to remove a honda engine is out the bottom.

I pulled my first motor threw the bottom. I hated it. pulled the motor thru the top the 2nd time. billion times easyer. droped in the new motor from the top, Just as easy.
If you got:
Car hoist: Unbolt the motor, all wiring/fuel/heating/drive axles and leave it sitting on a tire and lift the car.
Engine hoist: Unbolt the motor the same as above, attach the chain to the exhaust manifold stud and 1 on the tranny mount bolt. works like a charm for me.
If you are even ghettoer like I am, you simply lift the ******* motor out of there by hand when you have no front end peices on. expletive that was a bitch.

Thanks for all the replies, here shortly I may have access to a cherry picker, so if that happens, I'll go that route, otherwise I'll pull it out the bottom. Thanks again
I am a Honda Mechanic, I have Honda Mechanic friends, we have all done swaps, we ALL drop the motor out the bottom, this takes about 1-2 hours on a lift and maybe 2-4 and the ground. When you turn wrenches for a living you learn to do the fastest technique to make the most money and trust me, dropping it out the bottom is the fastest way to go. and you won't have to worry about "Banging" into **** with your motor/tranny coming out and going in. I've know people to use the cherry picker to lift the front of the car over the motor since getting a jack that high can be nerve racking.

Granted I don't have AC or PS anymore, but it shouldn't take that long. As long as all the bolts have been removed at least once before in the past year you shouldn't have to deal with anything taken your time. But either way, I am considerably pleased to know the Honda land mechanics do it the fun way - out the bottom

Well I just figured he as never sone it so it will take longer. Last time I dropped my motor out of my DA GS-R it took about 45 min so not to bad.

before i bought my hoist, we only had a manual winch ($20 home depot). we put one of those heavy duty bolts into the support beam in the garage heaviest motor ive done is a chevy 350 (i would say at least 800 lbs) never had a problem. sometimes is still use the winch over my cherry picker, only cause it doesnt require soo much room.
or... you can call me and ill bring mine over...

LoL! That's classic!
I just borrowed my friends hoist and leveler for the weekend and did my swap then. It was super easy with the leveler, especially since I have AC and had to be careful of the hardlines.
I've never pulled an engine from the bottom but most people who have say it's pretty easy. Maybe I'll try that next time.
