My base 01 lude is pearl white and the greyish color of the base side skirts is pretty ugly. I like the look of the side and rear skirts but the plastic is textured. I haven't actually gone to a body shop and asked them about painting them, but other people on prelude online said that they were told that if they were to paint them that the paint would eventually chip, crack etc. My question is has anyone actually tried this? Is there anything that I could do to prevent cracking (sanding etc..)? Should I just save some extra cash for a body kit? I'm just wondering if it is because the plastic would flex and cause the paint to chip or if it is the texture. ?

 

I was looking at the title and I thought I read this before somewhere. Didn't PO.com already answere this question? There were some guys that actually did this already.

 

No one ever answered the question fully. One guy said that he was going to do it but got a body kit instead. In fact the original poster said that he was just going to buy an oe kit. I'm really interested in this though and I'd like to know if it was possible or see some pics of anyone's ride who has done it.

 

I got a quote from my honda dealership and they said it would be 200 for the job. If you look at a Sh without the oem kit on it , the sides are painted. I think it's the same side skirt as the base.

Why would they crack, your bumper is plastic and i bet that has not cracked. People paint side skirts all the time, I would so go for it. I'm going to do mine when i have the extra cash.

 

Every one on P.O. said that the paint would crack, I didn't know why but I thought it might just be if the plastic were to flex. If the honda dealership told you they would do it though then I'm making an appointment today to get them done.

I suggest you use an adhesion promoter when painting the sideskirts, it'll help the paint stick to the plastic, reducing chances of chipping. Also, if you want to get rid of the texture, you either have to sand it smooth or use some kind of filler (which would also have to be sanded smooth)

 

I will not use a filler. It just reminds me of some pretty bad paint jobs that I've seen in the past. Anyway I've got an appointment to get it done tomorrow morning. I'll see what the honda dealership suggests.
