Default d16z6 overheating bad

Well i searched for everything on here about my car overheating and it came up with ten results about everyother car overheating but not mine well here is my problem.... i picked up my car from the detail shop and i noticed that while in park or neutral my rpms kept jumping from 1k to 3k every second till i put it into drive, then while driving for less than five min my temp guage started to get hot like all the way to the h then higher so i pulled over and checked everything out and no leaks but i noticed my resevoir tank was filled more than normal. I let it sit for a couple min then started driving again, overheated again but didnt stall, i looked at my hood and it filled with smoke, my overflow tank was boiling over... The internals are stock on the motor, i have a cai, and exhaust with high flow cat and 2.25" piping with a flowmawster hushpower muffler, so any help is greatly appreciated, thanks

The reason your resevoir tank was full is because you overheated. Your cooling system is considered a closed system, when water heats and or boils it expands. It has to escape to somewhere, see that little tube going from right under your radiator cap to your resevoir, thats where is escape to. As for your idle, when you overheat that can make your idle get higher or change like you explained

Next, its probally either your water pump or your thermostat. I would change the thermostat first, see if that solves it, if not than do your water pump.

Check your oil level as well, no oil can also cause overheating, but that would be just the begining of what it would cause. Most likely its just your thermostat or water pump.

oh ok that is what i was thinking but thanks for the help, how much does a water pump go for and the thermostat? are the changes hard to do with normal tools and some common knowledge with cars? i checked my oil level when i let it cool down and it looked good being i just had an oil change about 2 weeks ago(synthetic) so is there anything else i should check? thanks

Thermostat is easy and cheap, the water pump not as easy or cheap without experience. Go to Advanced Auto Parts, price your parts, and sneak a peak in the chiltons repair manual for your car, that'll give you an idea of the work involved for either job. Most likely its your thermostat, happened to me, i actually have a funny kill story while my car was overheating, how my car survived it i'll never know.
