When your exhaust shoots flames out?
Oil has absolutely nuthin ta do with backfiring.
Most recent model bkes (last 10 years or so) have recirculative emission crap that reintroduces exhuast/gas fumes to be reburned - more oftne than not, that will cause this condition (even on properly mapped/tuned bikes).
That's the main reason most tuners remove the emissions equipment.
Backfire usually indicates lean condition (see above).

Na... Usually it is simply unburnt fuel charge that gets mixed with fresh oxygen... that allows the super heated fuel to ignite. he may have a rich situation in certain parts of the rev band. did he do any jetting/mapping?
Unlike smoke (black=fuel, blue=oil,white=water) the color of a flame is more of an indication as the heat range as opposed to what is burning, though what is burning does have and effect on color. blue would "generally" mean a fairly hot flame(not white hot, not cool yellow)
