88-91 CRX Si Spring Question
Has anybody ever experiemented with cutting these?
The fronts are pretty stout looking, and I have 2 sets.
I'm wondering about using 4 fronts, cut.
I need a suspension "plan b" in case I start to go over budget on the $2006 Challenge car.

i think its a good idea. just dont cut too much. keep in mind the motion ratios.
and i think you should try to grind or bend whats left of the top coil.
are you thinking of using another set of front springs for the rear? you might want to consider that instead of cutting the stock rear spring since its progressive. cutting the top spring of a progressive coil wont do as much.

Have you considered one of the "el cheapo" ebay coilover sets? I used them for awhile before I picked up some GC's. Worked great for the price. About all the spring rates are around 350-450(my set was 350/400) although they never say it on the auction. All of the cheap units are about $50 shipped.
Looks cheesy but works:

they may not, but they work very good.

True.
However, I had a friend test them though so I know mine actually were correct(I was suprised, too). Regardless, they are much stiffer than stock and I was just throwing out a budget-minded alternative.

Coil springs are pretty simple devices. The rate is determined almost entirely by the wire diameter, coil diameter, and number of coils (and the material elastic modulus, but we'll just assume they're all steel). It really should be possible to get a good estimate of the rate using a spring rate calculator. Here's one I found with a quick Google search: http://www.stockcarproducts.com/pstech10.htm.
Maybe try it with some known-rate springs first to see how close it is.
Oh, where it says "Number of Active Coils", you don't count any coils that are touching each other.
