Maybe low on fluid,,Change it and put 2qt of honda motf and see what happens..

Or maybe some shiftlinkage problems?

Or maybe 2nd gear is just gone,,

Probably internal. Is it something that just got worse overtime?

Probably a bad syncro and maybe a bad/bent shift fork.

could it possibly be all fixed by just changing the fluid to a syncomesh or would it be a waste of time?

Yeah it will bolt up but that's a hyrdo tranny..Its a pain to convert to hydro and not worth it with d-series trannys,,especially a cx tranny....

Try to find a 88-91 dx,si tranny..

It sounds to me like the synchro for that particular gear has been bad for some time. When this happens, the repeated grinding of the gear tends to wear out the slider and the external spline on the gear it mates with. This causes the transmission to pop out of that particular gear. It sounds like time to either replace the gear/synchro/slider or the transmission.
