type r into ys1
an aquaintance had told me that type r guts will fit into a ys1 case and effectively make it a cable transmission. is this true?, and would this be the same as just getting a hasport hydro to cable conversion. or would the guts transfer give a more natural shift feel? would it give longer tranny life?
the ys-1 from a 91-93 gs-r Is about the closest thing you can get to a Cable Type R. s80 i beleive is the code. And i don't think transferring the guts from a hydro to a cable case would work. you'd need shifting forks imput shafts and all that stuff. I think your buddy is mistaken. But i can tell you that the gs-r ys1 is if not better as close to a Type-r hydro tranny as you can get in a cable. just save yourself the trouble and get the ys-1 if you're looking for a cable tranny.
do you know of any resources to see this. i checked here, but was unsuccessful in finding anything on the subject. i ask because i already have a type r tranny. although it would probably be easier to just get one w/ lsd. i currently sport it w/the hasport conversion, but i'm curious if it shortens it's life any. any reports on this?
Everything should swap across.
The gearing is shorter on the YS1. But the ITR trans has a LSD standard.
+ JDM has the 4.785.
For sure the gearsets are interchangeable, I am rebuilding a tranny
in a few weeks. I cross-reffed some of the PNs and all hydro trannies
and the YS1 share gears/synchs/etc (S80, S4C, etc)
The B18C diffs are different than B16 diffs. The final drive ring gear
is different. Now the S4C/S80 cases are the same PN. So that
means the diffs are the same sizes. And I think the S4C diff is same PN
as YS1 diff. But the final drive bolt pattern is different for the diffs,
so if you want to use a ITR FD -- you need a B18C diff.
If you want to use an ATS/SRR FD, then you can use a B16 diff.
But you really ought to get a LSD. bottom line is,make sure you use
the right FD for your diff.

shift forks have same PN's from YS1 to all hydro B trans.
btw,i have a S4C and YS1 dismantled on my benchtop.
internally, they look very similar -- practically identical.

There are 2 different kinds!!
vtec versions found on usdm 92-93 1.7l gsr and JDM 92-93 Integra B16A's
non vtec versions found on all other usdm 92-93 LS, GS, and RS models- have much taller gearing

YS1 tranny(Rsi/Xsi/GSR), VTEC models, are right under 5K when going 80mph in 5th due to shorter gearing.
YS1 tranny(LS), non-VTEC models, are right under 4k when going 80mph in 5th - due to taller gearing.
the teeth count on 92-93 LS YS1 cable trannies are the same teeth count(except for the 4th's main=29, counter=30, it should be: main=30 and counter=29, hence the 0.966 4th gear ratio) found on the (US) 94-01 LS models listed here:

i just verified them with my cable YS1 LS tranny last night.

The YS1 in a LS (92-93) runs hydro LS 1st, 2nd 3rd, 4th with its own 5th and it's own final drive on a B16 diff. Without having one here, I think it has a 4.40 ratio on basically a hydro LS trans.</TD></TR></TABLE>
it's 4.266 FD, same as listed from the link above

I get tired of answering all the "what works" questions when the part numbers
are out there online. If you can't do some PN searching -- you shouldn't open
up the tranny.
My YS1 is accepting the counter/mains from a USDM ITR. I got all the pics. Just waiting for my 4.9 final.
p.s. the VTEC YS1 is the shortest 5th gear available from Honda. Good
for racers!

Wow, 2 year old thread.
Anyways, i just did the ITR guts into a YS1 casing and i have the best of both worlds as far as freeway cruising goes...ITR 1-4, YS1 LS 5th.

just get a b16 S1 or Gs-r Ys1. The first gen type R tranny has identical gearing to the B16 S1, only differences between the two are the R tranny has LSD and is Hydro engaged. i run 205/50R15's on my Crx with a B16 S1 cable tranny and at 70mph in 5th i am right around 4100 rpm's

The S1 tranny isn't nearly as good. Its a small spline style from 1989-91 models. It gearing is still not quite as good as the ys1 and is much more known for worn syncro's. Also, the S1 from japan does not have over the counter parts available from dealers in north america, aftermarket ones from gear speed would be an only choice.
