avs es 100... big joke
whats up all. took my integ gsr to the track the past weekend. i had a problem hooking up. the best i could launch it without getting crazy burnouts and wheel hop was 2500. anything over that was just ridiculous. 60 ft. times on 2500 launch 2.33s. at around 2700 i got 3.1s on the 60 foot. tested this a few times since i was able to run it about 10 times. my question is, what is the best street legal tire i can use that has really good hook up on the track?
I'm going to guess (based on your location) that it was cold outside at the time. When it's cold, and your tires are cold, they're not going to grip well. It's not entirely the fault of your tires. (The ES100 is a very good tire for the money, but there are other, stickier tires out there, with a higher price and shorter treadlife.)

Well, there's street legal and there's street legal. Many of the R compound track tires and drag radials are street legal (literally, allowed by law because they meet DOT regulations) but I wouldn't advise them for street use, because they will wear extremely rapidly and they won't grip well until they're warmed up (even worse than street tires like the ES100). Assuming you want something that's intended for street use, I suggest the Falken Azenis RT-615, 205/50-15, available from Discount Tire and Vulcan Tire. The RT-615 won't last all THAT long, either, but they'll last longer than track tires - figure 10K miles or so.
Clay - he's got a GS-R so I assume he's looking for 195/55-15 or 205/50-15.

ya it was freezing that night. it was 28 degrees track temp. it did start hooking up tho once i got a few runs in. and you're right i do need 205/50/15. thanks, very informattive.

At 28 degrees, pretty much ANY tire is going to be slipping at the start.
If you're happy with the ES100 otherwise, keep using it (but don't go to the dragstrip when it's cold outside), and feel free to keep using 195/55-15. Remember too that the ES100 is going to last 3-4 times as many miles as the RT-615, so keep that in mind when deciding which tire is better for you.

I'm daily driving on the RT-615s. They're loud and stiff. Currently have 5k miles on them, looking at around 30-35% tread left, but thats with 2 track days and 4 or 5 auto-x on them. Negating the track, they'd probably last around 12k street miles, but thats just my best guess. For performance, I've been completely happy with them. They aren't drag radials, but I have to rev past 5k to break them loose on a launch on my gsr.
The cheap compromise would be to get a pair of drag radials mounted on 14s for the track. You only need the fronts, leave the back with whatever you street, and they should fit in the trunk just fine to and from the track.

Yes, makes sense.
On the GS-R, we've got over 28K miles on our ES100's, and they still have 4/32" of tread left. That extrapolates to a tread life around 38K miles.

i agree...just go with a set of drag radials on some spare/extra rims. Yoko es100's aren't drag racing tires. Its a street driving tire. Its like buying the Costco brand tire and going to the track, they might not hook for crap. I haven't had a problem with daily driving on es100's before.

yeah. no problem daily driving my es100s. i think i will go with drag radials. 14s if not 15s. maybe on hx wheels if they fit. anyone know the weight on hx wheels? thanks. is it lighter than slips? i'll probably psot another one if i dont find it on my search.

hx wheel = 11.8 lbs and it's 14"
slips = 11.8 lbs and are 15"
tires will be slightly heavier in 15" tho
... hx wheels are cheaper too

brakes can't be that much bigger.... but hey... i drive a civic, not a 'teg

I don't know about you, but my gsr came with a 14" spare. So at least some 14s will fit, it probably depends on the wheel design as much as the size. You don't want hx wheels though, they're very skinny.
thanks</TD></TR></TABLE>

Correct. I'm using 14" steel wheels for my winter tires on my '94 GS-R.

HX wheels will NOT clear the integra brakes. You will need to get some wheel spacers.
As for the AVS ES 100's being a big joke. I think the weather condition is probably the reason why. I have had 2 sets of AVS Es100s (205/50/15) and have no complaints. They work fairly well at the drag strip too. But weather conditions must be right and so do your tire pressure. 2.1-2.2 60' are easily attainable with these tires.

yeah HX wheels wouldnt clear on 92 civic EX brakes but 1/8" spacers fixed that.

I've tried fitting 14" HX on Integra brakes as well, and as everyone has stated, it doesn't work.
Have you thought of trying the Hankook RS Z212's? We sell the Azenis and the Z212's, and I can honestly say the Z212's are pretty much exactly the same, and cost less. You might consider this as well if you want a good street tire that is very sticky and has a halfway decent lifespan.
