sleavsed motors
ok i just bough b16a for my 1990 civic dx. i have pulled the block apart and had the head work a little with new spings and retanner. now i am putting new piston and when i went to clean the top of the block the cylinder wall was like a different metal because around the cylinders is a place where the coolant flowes. that seem to be aluminum but the cylinder is different. if this is normal please let me know. this is my first Honda i have work on.
Stop everything you're doing. Go buy a helms manual for a honda that had a B16 or B18 vtec motor as an option. Then procede to reassemble the motor...properly.
Stock honda motors are open deck, meaning the cylinders aren't connected to the rest of the deck. They come stock with iron sleeves pressed into the coolant sleeves, which are part of the block casting. Meaning, yes, it's how it should be. You'll have roughly half the top of the sleeve a dark iron, and the rest/outter part a whitish aluminum.
