JDM Y-1 rebuild KATMAN PLEASE HELP.
Anyone ever rebuilt their messed up jdm transmissions before? My y-1 is messed up. I tore it apart and found out the third gear syncro are bad and input shaft bearing are bad also. I heard that you can't get any parts from honda or acura dealerships.I took it apart because it always grinds in third and found the brass on the syncro was pretty shaved up bad.
Read this. It may be worth a shot. Katman only posts here when he can't figure something out on these EF's that are so hard to work on.

I copied this from a old post made by StorminMatt on the crx.org board.Well, finally I have found a match to the JDM syncros. Today I got my hands on a 92 Teg LS tranny mainshaft, countershaft and all the gears, and guess what? yep! they were a perfect match!!!!
I was starting to get worried as I have tried trannies from a 94 LS, 95 GS-R, and a 97 GS-R, with no luck. I have been looking for a USDM 90 S1, or 91 A1 for some time now, but they're not free, nor do they grow on trees.
Today a friend gave up his 92 LS tranny, and WOW!!! a perfect match. I mic'ed every part, then made sure that I could mis-match different gears and still have the tranny work. Success is such a good feeling!
I'm still looking for a 90-91 LS tranny to finsh up my JDM vs USDM tranny research. I have a gear ratio-1/4 mile calculator program, and once I know which trannies I can use, will build a killer "all motor" gear ratio set-up
Gear ratios are not the problem here. It's the mainshaft and countershaft gear splines. you just can't mixing and matching gears & syncros from any "B" series tranny.
Once I know which trannies are the same, then I will post those trannys and their gear ratios. Those ratios that I post will be the only OEM gears that you can use.
On the other side of this coin, you could just forget all this ratio/syncro BS that I'm talking, and just go get another used tranny with the gear ratio that you want. It is true that the 92-93 GS-R tranny is a close match to the JDM Y1, S1, & J1's.

from my own experience i just have to wonder why this person is telling all of this bs.
i've pulled apart my own JDM S1(yeah i KNOW its not a Y1) tranny and compared parts (3rd and 4th main and counter gears) with a 93 GSR YS1 and they were nothing alike.
Why? because in 1992, honda/acura switched from a small main shaft design to the current larger main shaft. my JDM S1 trans gears had a smaller inner diameter than the 93 GSR parts and the synchros were nothing alike either. that translates into none of the parts being interchangeable.
i forgot to mention that i have a 92 Integra helms manual and no where do the specs say that the 92 LS and 92 GSR trannies differ besides the gear ratios. that tells me that basically the 92 LS and GSR trannies are near identical internally.
my own experience tells me that if you have a junk JDM cable tranny and you need to rebuild it... you're SOL. get another tranny.
i myself am now using a 93 GSR YS1 tranny and though i am currently rebuilding it because some of the gears are stiff, i am loving the fact that the current rebuild i am performing on it is even possible. i'm replacing all synchros/bearings/seals, gears 1-4 and i'm replacing 5th with a 94 GSR gear. sure its costing me money but i think its a worthwhile investment.
meanwhile my JDM S1 tranny is collecting dust.
anyway...hth, J

Well maybe both of you are partially correct, cuz i've heard that the y1 is different from the s1, so maybe the y1 is rebuildable with the 92 ls parts or whatever but the s1 isnt. BUt shitty for me i have a s1. Oh yeah but luckily no grinds as of now. KNOCK ON WOOD!!!

jvo, yes you can replace 3rd & 4th syncros (as long as the gears are fine)with 92 LS YS1 syncros. Gears too, if you don't mind changing ratios.
BrianG, No, I don't have a S1 to play with, but I will have one REAL soon...(my friend hasn't finsh killing his)
I have seen the main & countershafts from a S1, and it has the same profile as the Y1...so my first guess would be yes.
Storminmatt made a good point some time ago, It was that the 92-93 GS-R's YS1 tranny's ratios are real close to the JDM S1's. In fact, if you're planning to stay "all motor", the GS-R's ratios are slightly better. 1st gear is still hard to hook up with, but once you learn how to use a REAL short 1st gear like a JDM S1 & USDM YS1 (GS-R), you can really kick da azz

once again. this guy is claiming that the S1 and Y1 trannies have similar internals.
if thats the case... then as far as i am concerned, everything else he posted is BS. i WISH i had my pics uploaded of my GSR YS1 vs JDM S1 internal pics to show everyone. the only problem is that i didnt mic the parts or measure them for reference. i only made sure that the parts do not work.
it ticks me off that this guy would even post all of this info trying to get everyones' hopes up when everything i have seen thus far tells me he is lying.
i have both my JDM S1 and GSR YS1 tranny sitting in my garage slightly disassembled. maybe i will take some pics comparing the parts to show everyone what i mean.

Why isn't there a source from overseas where we can get parts for the S1/Y1 tranny? I guess the next question is. What USDM tranny is close enough to the JDM to warrant using it instead of buying another JDM thats going to grind its *** off?

I have a Y1 with LSD. Could I take the FD and 5th gear from 90-91 LS and put it in my Y1 (higher final drive, lower revs on freeway)??
I have seen other resources that give the FD of US LS tranny as 4.266. What gives?

so, what did we come up with? Will the syncronizers from A USDM fit into the JDM Y1 or S1? if so which ones will fit?
By the way, how hard is it to change out the syncros in an S1?
