Default Help!!! automatic won't shift or do anything.

Hi guys, I really need some help. I got a 98 Prelude automatic. The problem is that I can't even move it from "park". I changed out the "shift lock control" and it still doesn't want to move out of "park". Some mechanic told me that my brake switch or something was damage and need to be replaced. Could that be the problem or is there something else to it? I am going to get it replace anyhow but I want to see if anyone has encounter this problem if replacing that still doesn't work? Anyone with experience or knowledge about this, please don't hessitate to comment! Thanks in advance!

Mike

If you hit the brakes and you can hear the release, it's not that. My old civic used to do that, you know what I did? Dropped that tranny and put a 5spd in, but since you might like the auto, you might have what I had. My automatic cable was stretched out and when I put it in park, it wouldnt read Park. The tranny would be in park, but the readout was in between park and reverse. I had to beat the **** out of the shifter to get it to move and read park to release my key haha.

look to the right side of the shifter there should be like a small hole or it may have a cover on it if it does take it off use a flat head screw driver to push down a tab inside the hole it should release the shifter from park

Raylude, I know about that little hole where you can put the flat head in and it would release the shifter from "park", but if that's what I have to do everytime I start my car up, there's gotta be something wrong??? I have to press it down to get into drive or reverse and I can't move it from drive to reverse unless I press it down with the flat head. Other then that, it drives fine.
Ludesrv, when I step on the brakes, I don't hear anything. What am I suppose to listen for? The shift lock mechanism releasing or something else???
The tranny was fine until this happened. I really don't like doing a swap to 5spd. Plus, I don't have that kind of money now.
Thanks.

there should be a switch behind the brake pedal that unlocks the shifter. When you press the brake pedal while in Park, you should hear the shifter unlock.

is this the part you changed?

well i had the same problem when i was still automatic my brake lights stoped working and it didnt go out of park i changed that^ part and the stop light switch just to find out that when i put my taillights back on the car one of the bolts grabed a wire and pinched it so as soon as i pushed the brake it shorted out my whole fuse box lucky for me it had warrenty at the time so they replaced the fuse box and i fixed my wires to the taillights and it was good to go
