Default The start of my winter project

***mods, if you feel this belongs in the appearence/cosmetic forum, i'm sorry, you can lock it if you wish***

well, most of the people know me in this forum as the "confused 97" because of the strange things that are on my R. This thanksgiving weekend, I decided to start tearing down the car and am working on restoring it to its true 97 form, as well as really clean up the engine bay which is a mess right now. I have met a guy here on honda-tech in which we will be trading bumpers and lights, and budman is leaning towards picking up my front bumper as a spare for his track car. I'm really excited about this build, so i decided to post this up and will update as the car progresses this winter.

I decided to get this big project out of the way so i can continue saving up for college later on this summer. I also want to thank the people that are dealing with me to help fulfill my hopes and aspirations for this car, you know who you are

here are the first pics of OPERATION 97:

this is what the car is famous for, THE SUNROOF i was going to get this taken out, but im going to leave it despite what anyone says. It will be original

im hoping to have the project finished before expo 6, and i'll be updating as the project moves on. thanks for looking

Unless it's a complete track car (IE competes in wheel to wheel racing in sanctioned events) I seen no need to get rid of it. I miss my sunroof terribly sometimes. The LS had some good points. Few in comparison but the sunroof was one of them. My next car Will have a sunroof.

After owning three 1995 GS-R's and then getting an R, the sun roof is the one thing I wish I had. Well cruise control some times (but who needs it in Hawaii?).

To the original poster I have a few questions:
You mentioned that you will be restoring it to its true 97' form. Does this mean that it's going to be all original with no aftermarket parts?

For those who don't know, can you catch us up on the vehicle i.e. where you got it, title status, production number etc.?

Thanks man! Looks good so far.

Glad somebody is taking it back to original form....

my R suffers from a bit of confused persona as it has a 98 rear bumper (accident resulted in this)

I used to have sunroofed/moonroofed cars, and I don't really miss it.... I'm not a very tall guy but with a helmet on, the extra clearance is most welcome....

Keep showing us your progress!

All this talk about sunroofs, I guess Im one of the few that hates them. I like more headroom, and whatever sense of security it is that I get from knowing that I dont have a giant peice of glass above my head (something personal I guess). I bought my old Civic DX specifically cause I didnt want the Si sunroof. I love the fact that the Rs dont have one, but dislike that everything besides the rare RS have it.

Either way, awesome undertaking of restoring it to the original body.

I as well am curious if the sunroof is OEM. Maybe a few more details on what is needed to get it back to "true" '97 form would be interesting.

Good luck with it, i'm sure it will be pretty rewarding for you. Keep it safe in that garage ohhh pleaseeee!

No Type R came with a sun-roof from the factory. It was a dealer installed option should the customer have wanted it. Yes the sun-roof was built from OEM parts, but did not come that way from Japan where the car was the finished product!

How can you not like a sunroof? Less you’re trying to cut down on weight. I have had three cars in my life , two out of three came with sunroof, and i will never go back to a car without one, less it can do 165MPH+ and 0-60 N/A 5 sec range or less.

Peace.............

Thank you Sir. I was aware that they did not come with a factory sunroof. i knew it was an option, i was more curious if this specific one was an oem unit, or if a previous owner had put something aftermarket in.

No, there will still be aftermarket parts on it, just a stock 97 exterior. I have done basic bolt-ons (j's intake, mugen header, Spoon N1, dropped etc.). I just love the look of an immaculate 97 ITR on the outside

Unfortunatly, it hasnt had a good history. the production number is unknown and it is a salvage title due to the owner hitting an animal the good thing is, is that it has never been modded before me and has all original parts and a healthy engine. I bought it from friends of ours that have a shop in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida. Some might have seen their car at shows or in honda-tuning. The Top Fuel replica EK hatchback
