Where can I send a crank to see if its in good condition?
I have a crank out of a GS-R that spun a bearing and I need to find out what kind of condition its in. It looks perfect...but I need to know for sure. Anyone know of a place that does quality work I can trust.

Yes, you have to have the crankshaft mic'd for tolerances. If they have to take off more than 10 thousandths the crankshaft is toast because when they grind it, it will be past the nitrated surface and the crankshaft will be "soft". A quality Machine shop will be able to do this for you for about $25.
Can't you get it nitrided-treated by a good shop then? Or maybe cryo-treated too? Otherwise, how do you get a knife-edged and balanced crank?
You can, but it costs less to just buy a used crankshaft that has no scoring on the journals. And not being nitrated on the counterweights is not that big of a deal (Knife edging and balancing). But no nitrated surface on rod or mainshaft jounals, and your pretty much screwed. I know from experience. I had a BAD machine shop grind my crank 20 over on the rod journals and less than 4000 miles after building the motor, I was having problems. Sure enough, the cranshaft was leaving material on the bearings and when they did a "strength test", it showed that the crankshaft was soft, but only on the rod journals.

I also have a GSR crank I would like to know about. It spun a main bearing. What information to I need to take with me to the machine shop to make sure they know what to check for?
Thats what im worried about. Taking it somewhere they dont really know what they are doing and them saying its fine or that they 'fixed' it and a few weeks down the road it fudges up my motor.
Thats why I was wondering if there was some reputable shop that many people use or know about to send it to.

I spun a bearing on my motor last summer. The #3 rod journal was out by a few thousandths. It was cheaper to buy a new crank than to try and repair the old one.
Anyone want to buy a slightly used Type R crank?
