Default grinding sound? clutch? or tranny?

ok, i have a 93 ls, when i decell my car makes a grinding sound, but when i put the clutch in it stops. its only when im working against the transmission i guess. i was told it was the transmission bearings but i was also told it was a clutch bearing. i was going to replace my clutch soon and i was wondering what is making the sound. thanks

Do you mean when you let off the gas when you're still in gear it makes the grinding? If so, it sounds like your input shaft bearing is gone. It's a common problem that unfortunately requires removal & opening up of the transmission to replace the bearing.

If you're in there, definately replace the input shaft bearing, the main bearing on the countershaft, and both differential bearings. It wouldn't hurt to check the shift forks for any abnormal wear (i.e. hard shift induced) and replace those if necessary as well.

All in all not easy or fun to do...pricey as well. I think I've seen rebuild kits available that include the bearings you would need.

Good luck!

Edit: Actually, in this post the parts you should replace are explained better than I was able:

If that's the case, I'd recommend trying not to engine brake or beat on the motor/transmission hard until you're able to get it further diagnosed/repaired. A number of years back I had a d-series transmission with this problem, I babied it around for a few months until I could get the money together to fix it. When opened up the mainshaft bearing had grenaded the bearings all throughout the transmission. After replacing most of the bearings it shifted smooth and ran fine again for another few years until I replaced it.
