Default Clutch/Rear main install

im going to replace the clutch in our civic really soon, the thing im nervous about is the rear main seal. I did some searching and found that it has to be a certain distance from the back of blah blah blah. I dont want to have to drop my pan to just replace the seal. So my question is if i just finagle the old one out and slowly push the new one in and get it alittle past the lip of the crank and eye ball it so it looks even all around, will it leak? I dont want to install it, pull out of my driveway and have oil puke onto the brand new clutch and be back at square one.

Look real closely at the old one. Then if a new one is to be installed, eyeball it in.

Okay, I will chime in, since I have done more of these than I can count.

First off, I look at the seal, really close. If its not leaking, and looks good, I leave it there.

If it is to be replaced, when inserting the new one, you make sure it is in the same amount all the way around. Pretty damn easy. The exact measurments ont he seal is roughly 0.5 - 0.8 mm

i always replace these when doing a clutch job unless i know its been done recently in the past just for peace of mind... i also run a bead of silicone around the seal to help keep it from leaking or backing out
