is the knock sensor necessary to wire up??
the questoin is in the title, i need to wire vtec and the knock sensor, but i have misplaced the sensor and they arnt cheap so i was wonderin if there was a way around it, thanks
no you don't have to wire it in to get your car running. It won't prevent VTEC from working either.
If your car is OBD1, you can have the ecu reprogrammed to have a disabled KS.
Hit me up if you're looking to get this done..

No, you don't need the knock sensor, it's a safety device. As for emissions, I don;t know how they test them where your from. But normally you ave two choices here, idle and load test (at 3000rpm), or if your 4wd a 2stage idle (idle and no load at 3000 rpm), if your car knocks for either of these tests. You have something more to worry about than failing an emission test.
What tune are you using for this? that would be the most important question.
If your running a P30 (b16) or P72/3 (B18C gsr/itr i believe i always expletive up the numbers) then you will have a cel - code 23 - and thats it....and no retard on knock

my car drove like **** when i had code 23. it was on a p13, it started fine, and idled fine, but it didn't sound right, and it was a lot slower.

If you didnt know, the knock sensor is a safetly sensor. What it does is pull timing back (aka retard timing) when the sensor detects 'knock' or 'detonation'. Over time serious knocking/detonation can crack your piston(s) or cylinder head. This becomes more apparent if you boost your engine, but for NA setups its not as serious.
The type-R ecu will look for the KS.
If you're engine is a B or H-series you can use any B or H knock series (mix or match) on any B/H VTEC engine...
