Default Radiator Hose Question

Im at a little over 100,000 KMs and there was a post earlier saying that coolant hoses should also be replaced along with timing belts/water pump etc., and I am wondering if replacing the coolant hoses is absolutely recommended at this time?

How can I tell if the hoses are worn, and should I replace thermostat when replacing coolant hoses also?

Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

Check them for cracking and hard spots. Give them a good squeeze throughout and feel their condition.

BTW, you'll feel like a dumbass if you don't just replace them now and one blows in a week.

<--------felt like a dumbass many, many times.

I agree. Why not take the five minutes it would take to throw new hoses on since your elbow deep in engine bay anyways?

They'll last the same amount of time.

AND you're already going to be flushing the coolant when you're replacing the water pump, so there's no additional coolant needed, either.

How long do hoses last? I've never heard of a hose blowing within the recommended change interval for the timing belt (I believe that's 90K miles or 6 years, whichever comes first). I've heard of plenty of hoses blowing at mileage and time figures just a bit more than that. There's no guarantee that a hose will blow at any specific mileage or time figure, but there's a significant chance that it will happen. (And when it DOES happen, it seems like it's ALWAYS at an inconvenient time and place.)

The hoses don't cost a lot of money, and it doesn't take a lot of time when you're doing the other items. So you can do it now, when it's a small amount of money and work, or you can wait for them to break, when it will cost you more and take more work to replace. (This is what preventive maintenance is all about.) Your choice.

Old thread, but better than starting a new one.

I'm replacing coolant so deciding whether to replace hoses too. Car is 119k km (74k miles), mostly stock and isn't tracked, hoses are probably original. I'll probably replace main upper and lower but what about the all the annoying little ones around the back of the engine? Are they on the same replacement interval or will they last much longer? Couldn't find anything in the service manual I have.
