Tried searching...need alarm and prevention advise...
Hey guys...as some of you may know, I just bought Dave's #0559. My apartment complex is telling me it might take a few weeks for them to find me a garage or another apartment with an attached garage, and after reading many posts on here and talking to people, I'm scared as hell she wont be where I left her, and since you guys actually care about my car versus some salesman who cares about a commission, i need help.
What do you guys recommend for a prevention system? I picked up a pedal lock already, but i am absoluetly clueless when it comes to alarms. I know many of you have successfully kept your cars for a long time, anyone cue me in on what brand/model of alarm is good, better, best? Any thing other than an alarm you guys recommend? I even thought about chaining the wheels togethor. I'm sure the more annoying i can make my car to steal the better, but i also know if someone wants it bad enough, its going to be gone no matter what i do. I can probably spend ~$400 on an alarm fairly quickly. Is this enough, or should i be looking to spend more.

after a prevention system look into "LoJack" or some type of tracking device to go along with your prevention system...just as a back up...

You should have layers of security to deter thieves from taking your car. You have a pedal lock, but also look into kill switches, alarms (clifford, viper, compustar, ect.), lojack, and a wheel boot. As far as recommendations for a brand, i'd probably go with Clifford...but that's only because of brand preference. Look through the Audio / Security / Video board for more info. I just did a search on that board and yielded 20 results using the word alarm as a keyword.
alarms wont absolutlely prevent ur car from getting stolen or broken into but if you do get an alarm be sure to invest in a good installation i.e. backup sirens, battery, even 2-3 alarms. IMO putting a boot on your wheel is the most effective theft deterent.
lo jack and gps tracking is helpful but those systems are used mostly for when the car has already been stolen, and they don't even advertise itelf on the car.
from personal experience i had atuolock, lo jack, pager alarm, and kill switch and my R still got jacked in front of my gf's house and i was only gone for about an hour...

lojack never works... it has save a few but 90 percent of the time the owner gets shafted and the car is stripped because of there slow progress.
any alarm is easily bypassed... however i still strongly encourage you to invest in one that has a kill on it once its activated.
find someone that knows how to install a kill swith as well.. hide it good..
and buy a club, and autolock.
just so you know there have been cars with all that i listed and then some that are still stolen.. if its gonna happen it will ... so dont lose sleep however.. still invest on some that i listed which arent too expensive and will stop the inexperienced thieves and slow the experienced ones.
Ive had mine for 2 years and no problems.. it should be ok for a little bit till you get a garage.

If you are really concerned with theft in the short term, it may be a good idea to delete your location from your personal profile. Having your city and state really makes you a more accessable target.

yep. most wheel boots purchasable by regular citizens are easily broken.
and if not, the entire wheel is taken off or car is flatbedded.

By a semi-experienced lockpick, yes. If they can't pick a lock, see above.

is this your only car right now?
if not, since its only a few weeks, find a storage facility to house the car for the few weeks that you are out of a garage

if correctly put on this boot will have to be cut off. no if ands or butts about it... its the longest government contracted wheel boot for the past 45 years.. no locks to pick, 1/4inch welds. all boots are serialized, if you need another key your name and serial number will be needed.
dont be fooled by that one person who showed it off at the parking lot... like i said it has to be put on correctly for it to work. and like i said there is no way to pick the lock >>> because there is no lock to pick.
the company is called mitico.com
if i had an extra one i would be more than happy to have some try and get it off a beat up steelie rim and tire...

Hey, thanks for everyone's advise. You guys brought up a lot of good points. I am going to take the layered route. Already started with little things, like she is registered 30 miles from where she is garaged, pulled the tag at the swap and the vin is covered. I guess every little bit will help, but in the end.....DOWN WITH THE DAYUM THEIVES!!!!
