Gear Grinding on EP3 Si
I recently purchased a used Civic Si w/ 32,000 miles... I noticed that 3rd gear grinds occasionally/frequently especially when shifting at higher rpms and speeds. I heard somewhere that this is common for this model. Anyone have similar experiences??
Is this common? Yes, very common, depending on how you drive the car. It's not unique to EP3s. The RSX and S2000 boards also describe this in detail. If you haven't been to http://www.ephatch.com, I'd start reading there.
I should clarify that it's not like a true grind (like when you mis-shift or don't have the clutch fully depressed), but more of the "clunk" noise when shifting into 3rd. Doesn't happen all the time, but a lot of times even with the clutch fully depressed. Don't know if the synchros are bad, or if trans oil related (only 32,000 miles, bought USED) or if it's nothing that's concerning. (BTW, do these trans use triple cone synchros)?
If you don't actually hear a gridning noise similar to you sticking a fork in a fan thats spinning then you don't have anything wrong with your car. You being able to feel the car go into gear is called positive assurance that you completed the shift.

my 02 started having the problem around 35,000 miles. It pissed me off man. but I complained to Honda twice and neither time could they confirm the problem. at 42,000 i went in for an oil change and had a tech ride with me and got the car to grind and make another sound which turned out to be clutch. The car hadnt even been to the track in a year and is babied now because if this damn gas price ****. But Honda covered my third gear syncro and went through the tranny and covered it under warrany. annnddd while it was all apart i went ahead and put a new exedy race clutch and act prolyte flywheel on it. just talk to your dealer. the syncro problem is in a honda service bulletin and should be covered under the drivetrain warranty.
my buddies black 04 civic si dose the same thing while shifting at higher rpm's goin into 3rd cause he was askin me what it was it didn't really sound like a loud grind just kinda slight noise....

that sucks !
I would go to the dealer again and again until they fix it.
Call Acura and complain and see what they say. There is a TSB out on it so the dealer must fix it for free. Print it out and take it to the dealer.
