Default oxy-acetylene lap welds--need advice

hey all,

so i've progressed to lap welds now (still couldn't get the keyhole to work on butt welds but oh well).

this photo, i added rod as soon as I saw a "c" form.

this one, at the beginning, i took it slow and let the "c" pool get really big.

I feel pic 1 is the better weld but not sure. what do y'all think?

Thanks.

Umm looks like you lack penetration on the bottom plate. All you need to do it focus the heat on the botton plate, once you get the puddle to form, bump torch up a bit to the lap plate and start dipping. The 2nd picture you have some undercut at the begining, which is normal. I would work on the position of the torch and your dipping pattern. The first picture looks better, but I would trust the 2nd one if anything because it doesn't lack penetration to the base plate. I'll post some picture of my welds sometime during the week. Also what gauge filler rod are you using? and with what thickness of the plates? Also for butt, I was taught to gap the plates the size of the filler rod. That didn't work for me so I gapped it slightly closer.

thanks all for the replies. these both are actually lap welds with one plate on top of the other. starting the puddle is the hardest part for me. thanks for the tip goal_kar. i'm gonna try that next time!

fyi, the plate is 14 gauge and the rod i think is 0.16mm.

Are you preheating the metal? I always heat mine before i weld on it. And it looks like your getting way too hot, from the looks of the bottom plate. nice looking structured bead tho.
