2000 accord brake pads shim question
I just replaced my front disc brake pads, everything went smooth, but I still have a question about it. According to Helm’s manual I must remove and install inner shim (A) inner shim (B) and outer pad shim with the brake pads, but I didn’t see or find any shim.
I always take my car to the dealer but this time I decided to do it my self (this is my 1st brake job) now I am thinking that technician must have forgot to install it or what?
So is it bad to drive with out shim?
I am in kind of worry mode, please help.
However my car is Ok, I drive around the house and did some freeway driving too, very, very smooth, break on the spot – no girding noise anymore.
Thanks in Advance

I could be wrong about this. I think the shims with the sticky substance between them helps to keep the pads from rattling and also helps keep the pads off of the rotor when the brakes are not applied. If the shims and stuff are not holding the pads, they are just free to rattle around in there and rest on the rotor wearing out the leading edge and creating heat and friction. I would deffinately get that checked out. Maybe the 2000 model is totally different from the 4th gens, I don't know.
If you buy pads from Honda, they should come with new shims. Pads from anywhere else won't come with them, and you should reuse the ones you already had. In this case, I'm not sure if you'd be able to buy just the shim, as they come sealed in the same box as the pads.

Thanks for the quick reply, oh without shims brake pads last about 1 year (I almost all the time freeway long distance for my work - so I don’t go hard on breaks)

I don’t have old pads, my new pads I bought from Canadian Tire (local parts store) they are Monroe Premium Brake Pads, may be I’ll look around to find new shims
Thanks again

That would be your call. I have no idea what will happen? Could be an invitation to warped rotors, who knows? In my experience, use only Honda replacement parts. Sorry, if I sound like a Honda commercial.
I THINK you can get replacement shim from Autozone, i heard someone was saying it but i have no idea.
alot of aftermarket pad do not come with it as far as i know

Icemanxxxv thanks for waking me up, yp I went and removed one tire, yes they are indeed pre shimmed (stupid me was looking for that piece of metal haaha). OK hmm feel good.
Now another question
My brake pad retainers are still good, so when should I replace that?
Should I replace that every time I replace brake pads
Do they come with pads or purchase from elsewhere?

why replace something when they are good?
kinda like wanting to replace your wheels everytime you get new tires.
so no. and it does not come with pads.
and plus, you don't really need them, but of course it feels better to have them.
