starting engine in cold.. precations, tip?
so its getting cold. i live in houston so im not familier with problems associated with started in the cold and just taking off. a few week ago a cold front blew throught and my tranny was slipping and had to have it rebuilt. is there anything i can do besides start it and warm it up to keep things normal? im just assuming the cold was a cause of my tranny slipping.... should i get an engine block heater or a tranny heater if they even make thoose? id really like to keep things safe.
All you can do is start it and let it idle for 10-15 mins. before going anywhere to make sure it's warmed up.
10-15 min
how much gas will that waste? oh yeah im also worried about getting lock out while i leave it to idle... and if i leave to door open im worried someone will steal it... even though i live in a nice neighborhood and everthing.. sorry for the rant
oh and dose the tranny move in park or neutral? i assume not

if you drive a honda, you can't lock yourself out (without a little effort)

make a spare key and lock the door after you start it.

Nah, you really don't need to worry about a block heater or anything of the sort. I've lived in Houston most of my life and have never found a need for it. When you start your car, just let it warm up for a few seconds. Just start driving, taking it easy and slow. No need to let it idle for minutes at a time.

the tranny fluid was flushed a month or so before i had to rebuild it and no it was not honda's fluid

Everything I've herd on the subject is to just let it warm up for maybe a minute or two then drive normally. That's why experts don't recommend the remote start thing because you should not let the engine idle for long when it is cold. Then add to it by taking heat from the engine to heat the inside of the car (running the heat wide open, while the engine idles).
