Default RSX-S Blown Engine

Alright well a buddy of mine got one of these about 2 months ago it was a 2002 with about 40,000 miles on it and it is completly stock never any mods. Well the guy drives the car like its suppose to be driven every once in awhile takes it almost to redline sometimes. Well he noticed a wierd noise and i thought at first it was rod knock well he checked his oil and there was like none the problem is like 2 weeks earlyer he had added oil so we added like 2 quarts of oil and he was going to head to the dealer because he has a dealer warrienty but he had to go home first well he took it home and the next day he had to add more oil well he headed off to the dealer and on the way the car broke down. It gets to acura and two days later they say they checked the ecu and it looked like he had over rev'ed it and the valve had hit the piston and like bent a valve or something. I think they are bs'ing my boy to death i mean im not all about honda engines im a fan or whatnot but im more of a toyota guy and even then im not the best but the type r in japan has higher compression pistions and longer duration cams so wouldnt that engine be totaly fucked up by there philosphy and from what ive read the K20A is almost bullet proof and is hard as hell to blow or tear up and when you look at moods such as the toda ecu it ups the revs to 9 so how can 8 or so even be close to messing it up. I guess what im asking is there any possible way its my friends fault he never mishifted, no mods, the engine is basiclly new it shouldnt burn oil like that i mean the factor is trying to shaft my friend hard core would someone give me some like specs or advice or anything. Any help is great just trying to help a friend avoid having to pay tons to fix something thats not really his fault.

Chris

Ask for the results of what the ECU read. The problem is the dealer can check the ECU and figure out exactly what RPM he overred too. The K series motor has a memory.

And bent valves is a very common occurence after somebody overrevs their motor.

Well the question is how does he over rec the motor when he didnt even take it to the stock rev limiter. He dosent have any upgrades either get what im saying. Like if the redline is set at like i believe it is 8200 dosent that mean its there to protect the engine so it dosent go higher like if it hits this it shouldnt total the engine should it? Like i said im a noob when it comes to the honda world so im not sure on all the facts really.

Hmm, if he bought it used it may have been overrevved before he bought it.

that sucks..that is why u always do a compression test when u buy a used car. do a leakdown too if u can.

cant u just pull the battery to reset the memory?

no engine is bulletproof. i can assure u of that.

take an engine from redline in 4th/5th/6th gear and send it into 2nd.

k20a2 motors are notorious for getting FUCKED up when you mis-shift(over rev)... i've seen/read too many horror stories with k20a2's...

especially that infamous asian video...guy mis-shifts hits 9K rpm...his friend passenger yellows "Oh shieeetttt!"

The thing is it was a certified pre owned car from acura, they gave it the warrienty for 2 years or 100,000. And they are trying to put it all on him.

Please bear in mind that you might not know the full story from your friend. Don't be insulted...just a suggestion.

Other than that, see if the dealer's shop can verify the approximate time at which the over rev occurred.

If it's a certified car on an Acura lot, then the computer should have been read before the car was sold, and appropriate action taken. If they can find that paperwork, they should be able to verify that the over rev occurred after the car was sold, and they would be intersted in proving to you that the over rev occurred after the car was sold.

The depth of depraved indifference and/or subterfuge that would be required for the Acura shop manager to fabricate the results, while not beyond all conjecture, is certainly unlikely.

Yes, there is protection but not a downshift or a mis shift. Say he was trying to grab fourth and accidentally put it in second. Then he would over rev. The ecu will only protect you when accelerating.

As stated before ask the dealer when this supposed mis shift occured. The ecu will give a date and rpm that the motor hit.

not to threadjack or anything, but what are some symptoms of bent valves?

are there any noticible changes in the motor sound or the way the car drives?

Depends on the extent of the valve damage.

Best bet if your worried is to do a compression and leak down test. Then you will know if any thing is wrong for sure. Or pull the valve cover and take a look.

Hope all turns out well.

most engines get screwed up when u over rev. send a stock 4.6 liter mustang engine into 7500 rpm's..and it's not gonna be a pretty sight

Well they took it apart today and yesterday day the engine is gone, the number four pistion cracked into two peices the rod was bent and one of the valves i will put pictures up tomorow, Acura's head of the garage said hes never seen anything like it and neither have i the piston is really messed up like two pieces that are all chipped they took off the oil pan and there are metal shavings every where they went and re chaecked the ecu and this time the said they found no hints of mis shifted or over reving so its looking up for my buddy, like i said ill try and post pics later tomorow its pretty insane.

Well, thats good and bad to hear. Bad because that is some extensive damage but good because the ecu says no mis shift.

As long as Acura finds out that he didn't do anything stupid to the engine like hydrolock it or run with no oil then he should be fine. They should cover everything.

In for the pics.

sounds like something was wrong other than mis-shifting or over-revving if it was leaking that much oil.
