Default rollbar or cage

For lapping events, for tech. Does it matter what material your rollbar or cage is? Or does it not mater what type of steel your bar/cage is for lapping events?

TIA for any help.

If you're going to get a rollbar for the purpose of safety, it makes sense to follow the appropriate rules put out by the sanctioning body with which you are running or may potentially run with in the future. Both the NASA and SCCA GCR are available online which have their cage/bar requirements.

If you want to be spoon fed, how about a little more info on what you're asking about...
Whose lapping days? What organizations? What are their rules and requirements?

Does it matter what a cage is made out of?

[sarcasm] Nah, make it out of fuggin exhaust pipe and bailing wire.[/sarcasm]

Seriously, if you're gonna be hitting the track with SCCA or NASA, their rules are online. Here are the links...

Yeah. That sounds about right.

Fool, PVC piping is lighter than muffler t00bing. Plus, no welding required.

use 1.5" dom .120 and you will be fine. dont use seamed tube for it isnt allowed. if you have a local race car fabrication shop im sure they will know. if you run out of sources or cant find the answers you are looking for you can give me a call and i will gladly explain everything you need to know.

It does when you roll through my shed.

Slammed is right... You can have a roll bar... but once you have a bar and you want harnesses you must meet the seat and belt requirements for the GCR... Dont forget padding

google "Kirk Roll bar" or "Autopower Roll Bar"

Other than the dates. Instead of 2 years or whatever it is for the racers I think it's 10 years for HPDErs. Not that anyone's ever actually checked the dates on my harnesses...

Lapping Events?

Does that mean Time Trials or just HPDE? All HPDE's I've heard of have no cage/bar requirements.

As for Time Trials this all depends on the organization(s) you plan on running w/. Most have a complete list of rules or conform to NASA or SCCA rules. So the answer is, check w/ the org you want to run with.

As for getting a cage or roll bar, a good custom-built one usually offers great protection, but you have to find a reputable place that races. usually the local club you run w/ has at least one sponsor that does race work and cages. Or go w/ a prebuilt Kirk or Autopower. Some people don't feel they are as good as custom welded cages, but the are cheaper and do meet SCCA spec.

I personally won't go w/a custom cage till I go wheel 2 wheel. For time trials I plan on getting a good bolt-in roll bar.

No one said they are required but if you put one in, it must meet the GCR/CCR

First of all his answer was great, second of all I did a search and didnt find the info I was lookiing for. Third of all wasn't looking to be "spoonfed" or a "douchebag" as you put it.

And I'll take your advice and use muffler piping for a cage. And maybe I'll use your ******* to bend the pipe.

And once again, thanks to everyone that did give me great info to go off of.

Sorry, but that to me read like you were being sarcastic.

The typical thing for people who ask vague questions on this board to do is get their *** up on their shoulders when someone tells them to go "read the rulebook" instead of giving them the answers, even though they didn't bother to mention in their initial questions such important info such as "I did a search and didnt find the info I was lookiing for" and "I'm doing lapping days with X organization."

Since you didn't bother to give any of the normal pertinent information that people would need to know in order to give you the answers you were looking for, and only asked a very vague question, and then seemed like you had an attitude when you posted your sarcastic reply, well, I concluded that you were in fact a "douchebag." Maybe I was too harsh. I don't know. Maybe I wasn't. I may have been right. You may be a douchebag.

And bring a pipe bender too.
Everyone knows Floyd's *** is wayyyyyy too loose to be bending tubing. Something about 3 years in maximum security, but I don't know the details.

This reminds me of when i was starting to go racing, and looking at local dirt track cars, one of the ads went like this:

For Sale: 1984 VW Mini-Stock car. Runs good, fast. $750.oo

I get there and the "roll cage" is made of angle iron... I looked in, turned around and walked away, the guy selling it said "whats wrong?" and I said Its not a racecar, there is no roll cage... He said "well it passes tech.."

Muffler tubing would have been a step up for this guy.
