Help with a Miata
Hello all,
Please forgive me for posting a non Honda question, but i know a lot of the people know of or have raced miatas in road racing and I was hoping to pull on thier knowledge. My youngest brother just bought a 92 miata ( tried to convince him to go Honda) and no more than a day passed and it puked a spark plug. I was wondering if you could guide me to some good forums as well as some diy sites for miatas, we will be replacing his soft top today and still deciding on what we should do about the motor (helicoil it, swap the head, get a new engine?)
Thanks for the help in advance.

It depends what he wants out of the car.
If he just wants it running, helicoil it and go have fun.
If you have the time, energy, and a little money, swap in a 99-00 engine. Flyin'Miata has the kit for $158.

<$2000.
There are several conversion write-ups online. miata.net should have one. It's not quite as easy as dropping a B16 into a 92 Civic, but pretty close.

95% sure 1990-2005 5sp miata transmissions are the same.

Here's a back door that works for me even though they try to block ebay at work. Google something (I use Civic Header) and on the right side of the screen there will be a link to an ebay search for a Civic Header. Click on the link and it should get you into ebay around the block. There is a prefix in front of ebay.com that our filter misses. Worth a shot.

Except the 99-00 block/pistons provide a higher compression ratio.
94-95.5 (OBDII) = 8.8
95.5-97 = 9.0
99-00 = 9.5
And the block isn't weaker - some suffer from #4 thrust bearing issues, but that is easily measured. And any motor that hasn't self-destructed in the 5 years since production is probably not effected.
