Make a cardboard cutout to fit like a hub cap. Get some string and tack it to the center, and attach a pencil to the other end so that you will circumscribe the wheel's diameter. Keep in mind that there might be damage/defects that can't be detected by even professional eyes. To check the inner part of your wheel, just cut a bigger cardboard cutout.

Try this place... http://www.truwheel.com/
If you go there, here are some things that will help:
- Play the poor boy. I went there after work for a quote (still in work clothes) and they raped me... but I love my wheels, and they're discontinued.
- Remove your tires and wheel weights before you get your quote. They'll line up your wheels on a balancer and show you what's up.

I don't have any before/after pics, but the wheels are great (my butt still hurts from the ***-pounding though). If you have another set of wheels, ride 'em for a while so that they can properly check your stuff.

Good luck, and let us know what you do.

How will a shop (such as Wal-Mart) determine if my wheel is bent or just needs to be balanced?

The carpet roll above
I don't know about the cardboard way neither

never take anythig you care about to walmart

sometimes even a slight bend can be balanced out. however if you get the wheel balanced and it still vibrates at a certain mph then you have a bend in need of repair

go to a good tire shop in your area, not Wal Mart, and have them dismount the rim you think is bent and spin it on the balancer to see if it spins out of round.
