Default BUYING AN 98-00 ACCORD UNLESS OTHERWISE.....

ok, sold my civic and thinking about getting an 98-00 accord. ive researched and found that the auto tranny on those accords suck. everything i looked up said stuff about the auto tranny. im looking to get the 4 cyl stick. has anyone here had or heard of problems with the manual transmission? and besides the common parts going on used cars is there any other major issues i should consider (ie. electrical and what not) before i purchase this model accord? since you guys here in the accord section would know best, ive come here to ask your opinion.

one last thing.. im still iffy if i want the v6 auto or 4 cyl manual.. is there a big difference in the drive besides the 50hp? does the manual make up for not being a 6 cyl?

thanks

As long as you promise never to put 50w gear oil in the Tranny, The 5spd Manual will do fine.

Manual make up for the 4cyl? NO.

V6 pulls stronger in stock trim, and is far smoother and quieter.

If there is a 'down' side to the V6.... lack of speed parts. (but you're already starting 50hp on the PLUS side already)

The auto tranny on the V6 sucks ***. Even worse that auto I4 tranny.

From what I heard, a manual I4 will hang with the V6.

Mine has 76k miles on it, and it still runs like a champ.

Both models have their fair share of aftermarket support.

IMO it is too heavy of a car for a four cyl, There is only a small difference in gas mileage.
My v6 auto has very good power I like it its also 50 pounds of torque more.It runs great 100,000 miles I am happy with the car. I am going to sell it soon you should buy it.
It is a gamble buying a 6'th gen accord. Some cars have the bad trannys and others dont. I think you should get a 7'th gen 6spd V6 or a 6'th gen V6 well maintained and low mileage with warranty.

If you pass other cars often you will like the V6 a lot more. If you drive like my father (never over the speed limit and never passed another car in his life) you would be satisfied with the I4. It's all about what you need.

Hey, What's wrong with old Farts?
Particularly the ones with bad hair pieces and the shorts pulled up under their arms? Or the ones' with more hair in their ears, then on their head?
You gotta love 'em.

Q1: No, never heard of any problems with manual transmissions in the 6th generation and my car's manual is still running great ('99 LX 5-speed)

Q2: The door locks seem to go bad for some reason, but this is a relatively easy fix (replacing the lock actuator). Other than that and bad automatic transmissions, I haven't noted other problems.

Q3: The 5-speed in an I4 really is peppy. I've not driven a V6 Accord so I can't compare the two.

Problems with passing with an I4 with automatic maybe. In a 5-speed, just drop it into 4th or 3rd and the car will jump for you. Really, I have no problems passing people.

With a V6 you need a lot less time, and gap between cars to get around.

I went through the same delima you are going through when i bought my 2002. The V6 feels way more powerful, is smoother, quieter, etc. It's not crazy powerful but feels better than the 4 for sure. I don't know how much quicker it really is. So what did i go for? A 4 cyl manual. I haven't ever had an auto car, i hated it shifting itself. I know i'd get used to it but i'd rather be rowing through gears. It's just more fun even if it's down on power. I don't know how fast your civic was, what model, how modded, etc, but if it was close to stock or stock, i don't think you will find the 4 to be underpowered. I went from a turbo awd dsm so it was a huge loss in power but i could deal with it. Go with the manual 4, i think you will enjoy it more in the long run.

Don't you get tired of shifting in traffic. My truck is a manual, heck I can hardly drink my coffee in the morning, have to keep shifting. You can relax and drink your coffee with the auto. I take the car to work every now and then, so I can just chill.

Not really worried about drinking coffee on a winding back road

Man I drive 1979 15 ton truck at work it has 5 gears with a split-shifter at work. First gear is useless. so it basically has 8 gears with a top speed about 70 mph, with that thing Its not stop shifting. That is why I bought an auto and now I hate it, I Am used to shifting and I get really bored in my auto. That's is just me That's is why I want a type-S

Nope, I don't mind at all. I don't even notice. I'd even say i enjoy it more, even in traffic because i'm atleast doing something rather than sitting there. Trucks are much different though, i'm not using a 1.5 ft shifter with long throws. Plus driving an auto on curvy roads is a bit unnevering to me.

the v6 trany is weak, i busted the differential bearings at 40k and toasted the tranny. but its definitely quicker than a 4cyl manual. i've raced my firends 4cyl 5spd from a roll and a stop. from a stop by the top of 1st u will catch up and pass them. from a roll u pretty much pull ahead of them smoothly.

thanks everyone for their input, dont know what to say about the hair piece issue.. lol, but most replies helped.

talontsiawd, yeah thats pretty much me right now.. it's a dilemma. my civic was 1989 stock 1.5l dx hb 5 spd. great on gas, but just a bit weak when the car was full.

i'd like to pass other cars, but i wont be racing anyone anytime soon.. if i could pass people with my old civic, im pretty sure i can pass people in the accord.. just wanted something more roomy then a civic, comfortable to drive in and at least 150hp. i would like a v6 but that model v6 only comes in auto which is scaring me to hell right now because im going to go check one out tommorow with 130000... about 70000 miles?? some days i just want an auto to relax and drive with, but i like having the freedom and fun of having a stick.. plus you can still drive a stick with a coffee.. that what cup holders are for.. or just steer with your knees.. ive done that before.. aint fun.

hmmm if i get an auto it would be the v6 for sure.... and my sister said she would basically trade cars with me if i bought an auto. she has a 2000 ITR. but that tranny issue is bothering me a lot, i dont want to buy that car and give it to my sister knowing about the crappy tranny......

BUT, Thanks everyone.. if you have other info that would be great because im hoping to buy one this week or next!

doood wtf, go buy a damn auto already, and get the itr!

on a serious note, if u think ur old civic is fast enough, then you will be more than happy with a 4cyl 5spd. hell i have an old 91 5spd beater and its powerful enough for me, daily driving wise.
