Its official... Northwest Honda Challenge accepted by ICSCC in '06
I have just returned home from the annual meeting held by ICSCC having met with the executive board for consideration of Honda Challenge as a recognized class for 2006. Those who viewed and/or signed the petition are aware that I petitioned for H1 and H4 only and submited a rules set that is effectively that utilized by NASA Honda Challenge (the rules are not identical only because I had to change any reference of NASA to ICSCC and CCR to Competition Rules and remove any reference to all classes other than H1 and H4).
The ICSCC executive board voted unanimously to accept Honda Challenge. H4 will be run in group 2 while H1 will run in group 4. Please email me for the exact ICSCC-approved rules; I will shortly make them available online.
Furthermore, Dan Heinrich of ICSCC spoke with Jerry Kunzman (the regional director for Norcal NASA) and was told that NASA would recognize the points results of all NWHC competitors as eligible for the National runoffs.
Apparently, Jerry also granted ICSCC permission to utilize the rules of the series, name, etc. although I am unclear on this as I heard the board make reference to accepting some documentation from NASA but I did not actually see this documentation.
There is currently no spec tire.
I feel it would be great for all those that may potentially run in Northwest Honda Challenge next year to meet and discuss any ideas, concerns, and generally get to know one another. I also hope that any honda enthusiasts that have had interest in racing but have put off getting licensed might use the official formation of NWHC to spur them into action.
There has been lots of talk about the desire for Honda Challenge in the Pacific Northwest... I guess now we will see if people's desire really translates to participation!
I look forward to seeing all of you at the track. You can email me at raymond@position1.net if you would like a copy of the ICSCC-approved rules.

Now that takes all the issues out of "qualifying" for Mid Ohio next September.

Congrats!
Hmmmm. So this means we can run a header in group 2 and 5....hmmmm</TD></TR></TABLE>
I hadn't considered this. The Lord knows I am sick and tired of changing the damned header and stock manifol between every session.
It also means we can change the diff ratios.

That is about the coolest part of it.
I wasn't really planning to participate, due to a number of reasons. Mostly 'cause I was only planning on running a full rally season and then the Westcoast Sports Car Challenge up at Mission. But also because I'd have to get new wheels and tires (has to be DOT and fit under the stock fender) and run a bunch of ballast. But perhaps I'll do it afterall. We'll just have to see how things pan out this off-season.
Good work Raymond and the rest of you. I like how HC is starting to become a National class and the NASA national championships is a pretty cool thing.

I'm sure there are some happy competitors up there but, looking at the bigger picture - has Conference sunsetted any classes in the last 20 years? I just don't see the constant addition of classes as a healthy thing for the greater sport.

I agree Kirk. I am not a big supporter of class proliferation. Very few classes have left. Last year we had 47 classes in 6 groups. Next year we will have, I believe, 50 classes. One change we made last year that I like is each class must meet a minimum participation level to receive championship status. So even though the classes are on the books, many are not run and eventually will get dropped. RX-7, GTA, SRF, JProd, etc come to mind.
There has been discussions about combining some of the common classes that have low entry counts but in reality many of drivers are there to enjoy racing but need the only car in class "win" to take home and to the office. Without the "win" they most likely would not race and we need the entry. They can have the trophy. It is kinda like the prize at the fair.

I wasn't too much for the idea at first, but now it is growing on me. There were not alot of cars running f prod this year anyway and the fast ones were all Hondas. So we can all still run group 2, but now we don't have to deal with swapping wheels/tires and header....we can simply run a 14" or 15" in a 7 inch wide wheel tire combo and run a header of our choice.
Personally that Bisi or SMSP is looking kinda interesting at the moment.
