Default Transmission choices.. Help

Hi,

Wonder if you could help me think out loud here for a friend of mine. Thinking about what tranny would be best for a 600+ horsepower Drag Car. Car will have a 9200RPM limiter and will probably run a 26x10 tire.

Below I have worked out what MPH the car should be in with a 26" tire and based on each gear. Assuming this is a high to mid 9 second car, and 150+ traps I would assume a GSR would probably be best. But as of late, I have seen a few people mentioning they are running LS transmissions and running 9s.

LS GSR B16 LS MPH GSR MPH B16 MPH
1st 3.230 3.230 3.230 51.64 50.07 50.07
2nd 1.900 1.900 2.105 87.80 85.12 76.83
3rd 1.269 1.360 1.458 131.45 118.92 110.93
4th 0.966 1.034 1.107 172.68 156.41 146.10
5th 0.714 0.787 0.848 233.63 205.50 190.72

FD 4.266 4.40 4.40

Thanks for your help...

The B16 only has a trap speed of 146 + tire increase so I am guessing around 150.

B16 might be the best choice, but not sure, Ive also the same problem for nearly same car - 560-600HP, 26x8.5 tires

I would go for the B16, but upgrade the valvetrain and shift at 10,000 unless you think you bottom end wont take it. Is it balanced?

Can I install a GSR 4.40 Ring, Pinion and Diff into an LS tranny?

Basically making the LS gearing a little shorter.

Also, can I mix and math gears between trannies? Lets say LS Tranny with a GSR 4th? I'm new to the Honda trannies and don't know allt he options.

Anyone know a good gear interchange website?

If anything just stick with the straight B16. The GSR diff is a different size then the B16/LS diff. (4 and 3 thousenths for the B16/LS and 4 and 6 thousenths for the GSR). Stick an LSD in the B16 transmission and go. With the B16 ytans and 26" slicks I could trap 148 at about 9275 RPM (according to the logger). More street guys will take the 5th gear out of an LS and stick it into a B16/GSR just for gas mileage. Then there has been a debate over weather the B16 actually has a 4.4 FD or a 4.26 FD.

Regardless, the GSR or B16 should yield 150 MPH trap speeds with the 26's.

Yes, but smaller slicks (25") will have the same effect on your MPH for alot less $$$.

why would you want to do this?

LS gears are FAR APART.

LS mainshaft, b16 3rd, 4th and 5th and maybe a 4.266 final

yes, you can. remember though...
all hydro b-series have the same first gear.
you have two mainshafts avaiable (two second gear options) a 1.9 gsr/ls or a 2.105 b16/itr
ls, gsr, b16/itr 3rd
ls, gsr, b16/itr 4th
ls, gsr, b16/itr 5th

jdm itr = b16 tranny, gsr 4th and 5th, 4.785 final, honda LSD

for all boosted cars, you're going to want to use the 1.9 2nd gear
if you want your rpm drops to be less (gears closer together) then use the b16 3rd. however b16 3rd is shortest. stock b16 3rd and 4th are almost TOO close together, hence why honda decided on using the gsr 4th and 5th (longer 5th is better for the short final drive)
