Default 88 Accord Clutch/Tranny Problem...

This car is a 1988 4 door accord, 4cyl, 5 speed manual tranny. Car has about 210,00 miles on it.

A few weeks ago, we were driving along put it in fifth and the rpm's just went up, NO power, like you had the clutch in.

Its only fifth gear though. If the clutch were bad, I would think all gears would be doing this. It goes into the other gears fine. Every now and then when you try and put it into fifth it grinds, like you arent using the clutch.

The clutch just grabs when the pedal is almost all the way out, but its been like this for some time.

Any ideas on whats wrong? The tranny doesnt make any noise or anything and I would think if it were the tranny and fifth gear went out, it would probably be making all kinds of grinding noises.

Any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

The grind is a synchro. Grab some Synchromesh from AutoZone... stuff works wonders. As far as fifth not working.....

what happened is that someone used 90w oil in the tranny and burnt out 5th gear,,,,,,5th gear is way at the top there is a tube that lubes 5th gear assembly if there is 90w oil , it is too thick to get through the tube enough to lube 5th gear assembly .. gear overheats , burns out and wears down,,,,,,, remove end cover and take a look at 5th gear assembly

Dh, Beat me to it huh? Now's the time for some of that "Mechanic Inna Can", altho he's gonna have one H..l of a time getting those required parts thru the filler hole I would mention he should stand aside when he prys of the end cover; there will most likely be some particulate matter attempting to escape!

90w used to work in the old Stone Crusher Muncies, but it's death to these sewing machines

P

There's a new one out: The Ron-Co Instant Transmission. The jury's still out about using them in cars, but they do cut mean Sushi!!

Wow, how long does it take for something like this to happen? I mean, I'm not sure when the last time the car was 'serviced'. We havent had it for that long, but I got it from a neighbor. I'll ask him about it. Doubt the tranny fluid has been changed in a long while knowing him.

Also, is this the only thing that could have happened?

Is this something easily replaceable or do I need to get another tranny?

Thanks guys, you rock!!!!

What kind of oil SHOULD be used?

I wonder if maybe he had the car 'serviced' at a jiffylube or somewhere like that and they put the wrong stuff in. They put gear oil in my uncle's ENGINE one time and f'd that all up.

I've never seen 90 weight cause it, can see how it could though. Imagine it would be a bit stinky. All the ones i've seen have been from a low oil level, usually from a leaking axle seal. Here's a pic of the last one:

Holy CRAP!!! Thats a 'little' worn!!

I was actually just going to ask if it could be caused from low oil level also.
How do you check the oil level on a stick shift? I assume there is a fill hole somewhere?

Not to familiar with Hondas.

So, I assume another tranny is in order. Or just drive without a fifth gear...

Not sure how expensive it would be to just fix the existing tranny.

So it sounds like basically it was getting worn, the when driving down the road in fifth it finally totally wore down to where it couldnt grab at all anymore and that is why it just reved up.

Makes sense.

So the oil should be checked immediately, as I assume it can happen to the rest of the gears also.

Thanks!!

well this is something that I only had problems with;going down the freeway and rpm rev. 5th was gone after all the other gears work'even reverse. After a few weeks of driving an hour to work and back at 140 kph approx. 80 mph the old 89 accordo coupe just statrs blowing oil. The answer is 5th gear is toast. Get a new trany. for you do the same

The fill plug is behind the right axle. The oil level should be even with the bottom of the hole.

They can be fixed, not too tough.

Actually they get hot to the point of almost melting. If my pic was better you could see they were overheated.

It has to get really low to affect the others, 5th is kind of isolated off by itself. But yes, it should be checked.

So would it be cheaper/easier to replace the tranny or fix this one? I've never torn into a Honda other than pulling a motor or two.
I've wrenched on many older GM trucks, but not Hondas too much.

Also, what kind of oil should I fill it back up with?

Oh yeah, and can it be driven just using the first 4 gears or will it mess things up worse?

For now, I guess I'll jack the car up and look for the filler plug and check it out and refill.

If it was mine i'd just replace the gears. Dont even have to pull the trans, they're under the end cover.

I've seen them driven many miles like that.

i have seen it many times ,, 90w cannot get to 5th gear to lube it ..it is the same thing as being without oil ,, and it burns the gear down smooth just like the picture you got there ...tranny will work normally on all the opther gears except when you atry to put it in 5th there is nothing there ..
