Civic Si and CRX Si trannys same, how much to pay and why so hard to find?
I currently have a 91 CRX HF and I’m planning on getting a DOHC ZC motor by the end of this month but seem to be having a hard time finding a Si tranny to use with it.
First, I wanted to know if the Civic Si and CRX Si tranny were the same.
Second, I called 2 different junkyards in my area and they quoted me $300 for the tranny, is this too much to pay or should I keep looking. The reason I ask about the price is
because I see on a lot of the Honda forums the Si tranny is going for around $100-150.
Third, if it’s so hard to find the Si tranny and hmotors has the ZC tranny for $150 and I plan on getting the engine from them, do you think I should just get a ZC tranny instead? If I got the ZC wouldn’t I have more of a problem with the axles and the hubs? I plan on using the Si hubs anyway when I upgrade the engine. Will the ZC work with the Si hubs and can I use the Si axles with it also.

I have been watching the for sale forum but nothing has come up, I even tried searching for older posts and asking some of the people who had them for sale.
I think there might be a u pull it in my area but haven't tried them yet.
1. Yes, they are the same.
2. Go back to the junkyards and offer $150 for the Si transmissions, if they don't take it. Tell they will never sell the si transmission for $300 and have them consider $150. If they say no, tell 'em to shove it.
3. I remember reading the ZC transmission is very short geared just like the Si counterpart. I am (90%) sure that the Si axles will fit into the ZC transmission.

civic and crx si trannies are the same for each model year. (im alluding to the fact that the 88 tranny has a different input shaft spline count)
$300 is A LOT for a junkyard tranny.
however, I've got a JDM tranny with really clean internals and good synchros, thats worth $250 in my opinion. im open to offers.
yes, getting a DOHC ZC tranny will have further axle issues. the gearing and final drive is very different. if you dont want to mess with that, then dont bother.

First I bought my ZC tranny from steve at Hmotors for $150, well worth it IMO. Second you need 90-93 teg axles for the transmission to work.
It is sooooooo worth it though having equal length axles; it was well worth the money. Hmotors sells the entire ZC swap, axles halfshaft tranny and all, it's just not listed on their web site. I think I got the entire thing for $970 shipped, just not the ECU because they were backordered.
Yes, you need the SI hubs for any axles, whether they are dx, SI, ZC or teg. I had to swap hubs as well because some tool somewhere down the road before I bought my car gave it HF hubs, as well as a 4 speed std transmission and shitty axles to go with it.

hmmm that's a good idea, I might have to try that. There's no way I'm paying $300 for something that some of you guys are paying half the amount.

Ah crap, thats right, the dohc zc uses equal length axles, forgot about that. You can probably use the Si axle on the passenger side (the shorter axle). Not sure though.

You won't need to change knuckles or axles for your HF if you use a Si tranny. The inboard hubs on the axles are all the same (DX,HF,Si) excluding spline counts between year series.
Good luck finding a good Si tranny. Not that they are rare

So I could just keep the HF hubs and that would work? Would I still be able to use the HF axles or would I have to use the Si axles?

In the event that he described which is keeping your hubs you would have to stay with your HF axles too. The DX and SI hubs accomodate bigger ends. The only reservation I had about doing something like that was that those axles seem tiny, they were obviously designed for weight savings and not power, and I was always worried they would break.

The ends won't fit in the transmission, they're too small. We tried this.

Ok so if I stay with the HF hubs I can use both the HF axles, but if I go with the Si hubs I can use both Si axels?
Sorry for all the questions but I have never really worked on a car and just bought my VERY first car in August. I've ridden a motorcyle only since I was legal to drive.

At Hmotors I got the axles for $75/pair plus tranny for $150, plus halfshaft for like 50, plus shipping. I would just call them and see if in some magical way they can hook you up. If you're getting your engine from there too, even better you'll save on shipping. Steve's a good guy he can help you out here. He might even have some SI trannys laying around, who knows.
Having ridden in my DOHC ZC with ZC tranny and my friend's DOHC ZC with SI tranny, we both agreed that even though the SI is rumored to have better acceleration, the equal length axles make it worth the extra money. I could launch alot harder than he could and grab traction alot sooner.
p.s. my total shipping for everything was $174. Engine, tranny, everything. If you factor that by weight, which is usually what trucking companies do it by on pallets, that might come out to be like only $74 for the tranny itself, probably less. Hmotors is the way to go here.
Also other advice: HAVE IT SHIPPED TO A WORKPLACE!!! It's soooooo much cheaper if you ship it somewhere where they can unload it. If they have to send a truck with a lift to your house its going to cost you, thats what the guys at Hmotors will tell you, and being that I used to work in industry I can verify that.

Might have to contact Steve and ask if they have anything available, save me a lot of trouble if I could get everything together.

Yea, once again even though the combo's arent on the site, they are there. His customer service is incredible, as the distributor I got was bad, and that is not his fault, but he quickly made it right. For $974 I was the happiest person alive.

i bought my si tranny for 300$, not the best deal ever but it was from a used transmission warehouse, was pretty clean, and i needed it asap. They brought the first trans into the shop opened it up and it was full of water and rust. We then sourced another one since that one was beat. I had that luxury and i paid the price as a result.
Better deals can be had but make sure you are buying it from a reputable person/dealer. You dont want to halfass a tranny

1. same answer: trannies are the same just stay away from 88 models, big pain!
2. same answer: keep looking
3. Fact from Personal Experience: Do you plan on going turbo at any point in time?? Because if you do, stay away from the ZC cuz yeah, the gears are rediculously short, AND WOULD EVERYONE QUIT SAYING THAT THE SI TRANNY HAS SHORT GEARS!!!!! YOU CAN TAKE 2ND ALL THE WAY TO 80MPH, THAT'S NOT SHORT!!!!!!. So, if you do wanna go turbo, go with the si tranny it's perfect, I'm looking for one myself. As far as the hubs and axels go, you will need DX or Si hubs (anyone who tells you different is wrong/ Hmotors will tell you the same, that's where I got my engine/tranny). As for axels, you can use si or dx axels without the half shaft or you can use the half shaft with 90-93 teggy axels, either way works, I've done both.
P.S. I just finished another zc engine/zc tranny swap this past weekend and everything I've said remains, and we used dx axels (same as si axels).
