Default 97 itr running too rich... please help :)

OK so heres the story. (ive searched the forums but cant find anything useful)

97 ITR, stock ECU

Runs really rich. Too rich. To the point I have to use Simple-Green to remove the carbon buildup on my bumper and back of the hatch once a week. Also burns a little oil, but nothing bad. The smoke that comes out the back when I gun it is black not blue.

Heres what I've tried to correct the issue:
1. changed fuel filter
2. changed oil filter
3. changed spark plugs
4. changed pcv valve
5. changed 1st o2 sensor (closest to engine)
6. tried running different oils - conventional, synthetic, 5w30, 10w30
7. tried running different octaine gasses - 91-94
8. added external msd ignition (no change)

I throw no engine codes, vtec hits good and hard, car pulls well. Again, STOCK ecu.

Is there anything else I can do/check other than an engine rebuild?

THanks in advance for ANY help

Andy

get a O2 wideband read to confirm you are running rich and where on the rev band its doing so

Agreed. You wont know anything for sure unless you get a wideband O2 reading.

One thing to consider though is that my 2000 ITR had a black bumper in just a day or two. It didnt burn oil, and the a/f was fine on a wideband O2 reading. Once I changed the catback, I noticed considerably less deposits on the bumper-- taking about one week to get very black. Keep in mind that car was my daily driver and my changing of the cat-back was not an attempt to reduce the carbon deposits.

Aww the curse of the black bumper. Mine does the same thing. Ive had it checked out a few times and everything is normal. It seems to be more in their nature than anything.

mabye run a compression test and leakdown, it shouldnt run so rich like that. something sounds fishy.

so did you ever go ahead a get a wideband read done?

this wouldn't hurt either, if for just to eliminate a potential factor
