I have a 98 DX non-vtec. I recently purchased a vtec head, and i'm curious as to what i'm going to have to do to wire up vtec. And also recommendations for computer choice, would a plain ex computer work? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks a lot!
I'm doing the same thing on my 97 ek hatch. you need the ecu from the ex civic, the vtec solenoid (obviously) the side draft TB and IM the IACV that goes with that IM and a knock sensor, most honda, integra ones will work, I couldn't find any used ones that weren't broken so I bought one from honda, 117 bucks! anyway, everything should,(i say should because I haven't done mine yet) bolt up, use y8 head gasket, you need intake and exhaust headers. the wiring (with an EX ecu, P2P) you need the IACV fix, you'll need to run the wires for vtec and the knock sensor. and there's also a fuel tank pressure sensor that you may already have because your car is a 98, the EX ecu is looking for it, my 97 doesn't have it, but I've read that if I give it 2.5 volts it will work. I live in Massachusetts so I can't drop down from OBD2 to OBD1 and still pass inspection, also if you replace the ecu, (like I did) with a junkyard ecu the VIN numbers will be different, with according to the field officer for mass state inspections will put me on a VIN mis-match report, but he said as long as I have a receipt for it I'll be fine. I think that's it, except for the EX catalytic converter you'll need. Do some research, fftec has good info, try to get a 96-98 Intake Manifold, no cold start air injection ports.
I recommend the obd2-obd1 conversion harness with a p28 ecu. This eliminates the need for a knock sensor, and may save you some headache in general.
Other than that just use the vtec head and intake manifold (not required but preferred) and vtec header. wire up the vtec, and IACV (i think, dont recall).
Thats about it, i ran a "minime" for a while when i first got into the scene, nice setup
i did a while ago and my memory is shot

Thank you very much. thats a good bit of info to start with. Couple more Q's:
-What do you mean by IACV fix?
-If I get a skunk 2 manifold for the vtec head, will the P2P still be allright?
-I believe the vtec head i bought is from a 92-95 civic, does that conflict with the fact that i'm OB2II and also cannot convert to OBDI (im from NY)
I think thats it, thanks again!

I haven't been paying attention to 92-95 info, so, (as far as wiring) I'm not sure of what you'll run into. on my EK the IACV fix is because th d16y8 uses a two wire plug and the y7 uses a 3 wire plug, their pin locations on the EX ecu are different, so if you re-use the plugs in your y7 you have to move the pins over to the right spot. this link has a huge amount of info, its under "ecu & wiring tech"
